A new series of Alton Brown?s Feast on Asphalt II has just started on FoodTV. It?s a travelogue that follows Alton from the mouth of the Mississippi up to its northern reaches all the while visiting local eateries and avoiding chains and fast-food places. The first episode started in Venice, LA and traveled up to NOLA. Their first stop was at the Luzianne tea facility. He arrived in NOLA later that evening and they decided to eat at Mulate?s across from the Convention Center (I thought this really odd as this is a pretty much a ?touristy? place ? as he later admitted). Anyway, he was smitten by the fried alligator. The next morning they stopped at Big Fisherman?s on Magazine where he was amazed that 150 lbs. of boiled crawfish would be sold in a day. He also had his first stuffed artichoke. Apparently fascinated with alligators, they next traveled across the Causeway to see an alligator farm and then returned to Vacherie where he had cracklins, boudin balls, gumbo, red beans & rice and alligator (again). I forget the name of the restaurant, but this was clearly a locals place. His last stop was LaPlace where he had andouille and hog?s head cheese at Baileys.
His next stop will be Baton Rouge and I?m curious what locals he will visit (maybe the local Galatoire?s ). The show will air Saturday night.
