as a child of the Sixties who was influenced deeply by President Kenndy's "Ask not..", I found this news story refreshing:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/30/business/30oath.html

I really do believe there is a way to be successful (lots of money if that is your definition of success) and make a positive difference for the country and the world...and I believe it is admirable to want to do something for the greater good.

It gives me hope that these young people are seeing beyond their bank accounts.

While I think it's great that there is a shift in the thinking about ethics in business, I find it sad that it took an economic crisis to make people reexamine their priorities and decide to not break the commandments or the law in their daily business dealings.

?As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.?

Um, sorry but that should have been your motto all along!

There absolutely is a way to make plenty of $$ and contribute to the greater good at the same time. Paul Hawken knows how and has written several books with plenty of good information on it (I'm reading his Natural Capitalism at the moment). William McDonough knows how -- his book is one of my all tmie favorites -- Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things.

Scads of other folks know how, too, it just seems the media finds it more profitable to report on the bad guys. I wonder if that's because hyped bad news is what folks will watch/buy papers to read about? I spend my media dollars on whatever magazines, movies, websites I can find that are about good news, positive uplifting stuff, etc. If enough of us shifted our attention to sources of good news, or even balanced news, and away from the hyped negativity, maybe the media would get the message and start doing a better, more balanced job. I am not just talking about fluffy feelgood human interest stories, I'm talking about serious business and social news of successful, substantive good work going on.

Yes! Magazine is one such news source (only quartlery, wish it were weekly) I support; I encourage others to do the same. You can read a good bit of it online.

Anyone know of other such news sources?
