McCormick has been intent on upgrading public parks throughout Walton
County. In addition to the Choctaw Beach Park on Hwy. 20 West,
Commissioner McCormick is also planning to improve five acres of
property on Bay Loop Road acquired from the U.S. Department of Interior.
Phase One of the plan includes a new boat landing and parking lot. “We’re
just standing by, waiting on some surveys. Eventually, we plan to develop it
into a full-fledged park,” he added.
Commissioner McCormick also noted that the final phase of work on Grady
Brown Park was completed a few months ago. Improvements included a
new jetty system, some dredging and over 120 feet of additional shoreline.
Of concern now is what to do regarding some of the diseased and damaged
trees within the park. Possible options will be brought forth soon for
consideration by the Walton County Board of County Commissioners.
Improvements at Cowford Landing have also been completed. “It is a very
nice facility with some primitive overnight camping,” said McCormick. “It is
part of an eco-tourism project to interconnect with some other parks and
green spaces within the county that you can travel to by water.”
McCormick also said that utility infrastructure projects continue to be a
primary necessity throughout the county. “With the growth of Freeport, we
have some major sewer upgrades in the works. We have one south of
Freeport that I had the privilege of being able to work with the city and help
secure some funding for that. We’re working on some sewer extensions east
of the city limits of Freeport,” he said. “We want to get the water and sewer
to the outlying areas.”
McCormick noted that FDOT is planning some improvements along Hwy.
20, as well as improvements to the intersection of Hwy. 20 and U.S. 331 in
Freeport.
A traffic signal at the intersection of US 331 and Old 331, just
north of Freeport will soon be operational and will improve safety there.
“It’s no secret that Freeport is getting bigger,” McCormick said. “It’s been
my home for generations. I am excited to be here and help navigate this
process as we move forward. Infrastructure is a big demand, but I don’t
want to forget that our main ‘infrastructure’ is our citizens. My goal is
always to move us forward in a positive direction. It’s a balance between
taking care of everybody and every thing.”
