One of the "facts" presented by those who seek defeat of the Supt. referendum is the "high costs" of benefits if a "hired" Supt leaves.

This data it's from the FRS Drop database.

FULL NAME ANDERSON, CARLENE
AGENCY NAME WALTON CO SCHOOL BOARD
EFFECTIVE DATE 11/1/2009
DROP END DATE 5/31/2014
PROJECTED LUMP SUM PAYOUT $328,898.14

:She would also be entitled to payment for any accrued unused sick & vacation days.

Had she not been reelected her DROP "Deferred Retirement Option Plan" money would not have been that amount. That equals $65779.63 per year x the 5 years she is eligible to participate in the DROP. In other words she is collecting her retirement in a savings account until she terminates her employment. If the referendum passes, is it possible that a hired Superintendent could also participate in the FRS "Florida Retirement System" and also participate in the DROP? This doesn't change my mind about voting Yes but in my opinion we could hire a Superintendent that is part of the FRS and maximize their benefit and they could collect more.

The joke is on us. Drop was put in place to keep qualified teachers in place so there would be teacher shortage. The irony is obvious.

I totally understand Drop, but one of the NO camps bullet points is the high cost for these same things when a "hired supt" retires.

No difference.

Actually, the No vote cannot have it both ways. DROP is available for long-serving employees who participate in the state retirement plan. To hear the NO vote tell it, an appointed superintendent will be a short-timer from a foreign land, thus in eligible for DROP.

I am confused. If Mrs. Anderson started participating in the DROP program on 11/1/2009, shouldn't her end date be 10/31/2014? According to the drop website you may only participate for a maximum of 60 months. If you fail to terminate on time, you will lose your accumulated DROP account, your retirement will be canceled, and your FRS membership will be reestablished retroactive to the date you began DROP. It does state that elected officers who reach normal retirement while holding an elected office may defer their drop enrollment until their next succeeding term of office and may participate for the lesser of 5 years or the length of that term but if she is already in DROP, she obviously didn't defer.

Where do I buy that shirt? Does the 30a apparel truck at Gulf Place carry it?
