I was watching the tropical update the other night, and the meteorologist was talking about activity far out in the Atlantic. I swear to a higher power that he points to an area of low pressure and says "but UNFORTUNATELY we don't expect this to develop into a hurricane". He caught himself after he said it and changed the UNFORTUNATELY to fortunately, but I have a strong feeling he meant what he said the first time.

How unbelievable that the horror these things can bring to so many are just great theater, and ratings, to a few.

Well, one time awhile back my brother said that he heard one of the meteorologists say that they just love hurricane season. I was shocked that they would say that on the air.

I heard that blooper on TWC, too. They take a perverse pleasure in these foul weather developments, because it is their moment of fame, I guess. One would think that the unprecedented tragedy that befell the Gulf Coast so recently would inject some sensitivity. Not to mention reporting these weather conditions accurately as to status and forecast and location. I feel particularly uncomfortable with the anchor named Bob Stokes during storm events. It's that his level of excitement and (seeming) amusement is too palpable for comfort. The worse the news is, the more animated he becomes, barely containing a smile.

In my opinion, TWC has saved many lives. But there is a need to recognize how much we depend on them for unbiased and non-sensationalized reporting in times of distress. I would also like to see more recognition of our South Walton coastal areas, as opposed to news exclusively from Gulf Shores, Pensacola, Panama City, Biloxi, NOLA, etc. We have a lack of news because we're not a city or an area previously devastated.

I could also do without the interviews with people who are quite capable of evacuating, yet choose to stay. We don't need coastal Harry Truman (Mt. St. Helens) legends who exercise exceedingly bad judgement. I thought the comment prior to Hurricane Ivan, from the sheriff in Pensacola was a good one, "If you're planning on staying, please call the Sheriff's Department and tell them where your dental records can be located."
