Over the weekend, Habitat for Humanity of Walton County’s ReStore was broken into, ransacked, and burglarized.
Over $7500 worth of equipment and goods were stolen from the Restore located in Freeport, not including damage to the store.
The thieves took essential assets including two computers, security cameras and DVR, along with thousands of dollars worth of tools that are vital to the organization’s effort to fund their next building project.
“This is such a devastating loss to our organization. They took all of our computers, tools, electronics, and anything of value. I am in absolute shock that someone would steal from a charity whose whole purpose is to serve the community and assist families living in subpar living conditions,” says Teresa Imdieke, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Walton County.
“We are going to have to replace thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment in order to continue with our mission of providing housing opportunities to those that need it most. I just pray that it doesn't set us back too much. There are so many well deserving and working families in Walton County that need our help,” Imdieke added.
The Habitat for Humanity Restore is a building material and housing goods thrift store that serves Walton County and the surrounding areas. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is located on Hwy 331, a mile and a half south of Highway 20. The ReStore supports the local Habitat for Humanity’s operational budget, provides low cost housing goods and construction materials to the community, and keeps reusable items out of the landfill. Last year alone the Habitat for Humanity ReStore served over 4100 individuals.
Habitat for Humanity of Walton County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides affordable housing opportunities to low income families. To date, Habitat for Humanity Walton County has built 26 houses and remodeled two others in the local community.
