What is the condition of P'cola Beach now after Ivan? I'd heard that they had been hit really hard & wondered if they'd recovered to be able to have a decent summer season. We would like to visit, if it's possible or accessible. It was our family's beach of choice back in the 70's. Any pictures?

They're slowly getting back to normal, though there's still a lot of work to be done. Blues on the Beach is this weekend like it always is, and there is a good deal of concern that the usual 100,000+ people who will show up will only have one way on and off the island because the back road through Navarre Beach is still under construction.

Lots of info at the Pensacola News Journal web site.

I made a brief trip in and out to shoot photos at Portofino on the eastern end on Monday. The beach road between Pcola Beach and Navarre is still closed.

All of the awesome dunes are gone and the beaches are pretty much flat. Most of the debris out on the island has been cleaned up and there is a lot of construction going on. There are a lot of vacant lots where houses were, and a lot of buildings damaged still waiting to be removed.

Over all it looked better than I thought it would. If you can find a place to stay you might enjoy it because it shouldn't be too crowded. But you may be saddened by comparison to the way it was.

Portofino is awesome by the way if you like the big places. 5 21-story towers overlooking miles of National Park, which you can't drive out to because the road is closed.

The farther West you go the worse it gets. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are still hosed. We went a couple months ago and there were still homes on the bay side of the road that used to sit on pilings on the beach. Sad stuff.

My parents looked at a couple of places on Navarre Beach a few years back. I did some digging around and came up with a couple of post-Opal pictures for them to see that show why it's a really bad idea to keep rebuilding in a place that seems to be about five feet above sea level during low tide.
