I am getting tired of having to jump in the auto every time I need something at the grocery or hardware store. Is there a "planned town" somewhere in this area that is designed for walking to the shopping area, or maybe hopping in the golf cart, without having to drive the freeway?

Sandestin is a good bet for this, although it's in the scary 'forbidden zone' (West of Santa Rosa Beach) where many posters on this board rarely go :rotfl:

:welcome: Bob!

If you mean somewhere like "The Villages" down south...no.

Bob, finding a hardware store and a grocery store in this area is difficult enought. Finding them in the same community is impossible at the moment. Most of the communities are resort and have only resort type stores. Perhaps you need a scooter.

If you lived in Grayton Beach you would never need a car. There is a hardware store and a small market, shopping, bars, restaurants, gym, offices, etc.

Most people would require a larger grocery. You could live in WaterColor or Seagrove Beach near Publix and bike to everything you need.

Right, but he won't be carrying those on his golf cart either. Also, they don't carry lumber at that Frank's Hardware. ;-)

Since you've mentioned this community bias before, can you explain the reasons (if any) for why it exists?
I have been down to seaside and many of the 30A communities and have not been impressed with the beaches or the infrastructure and for that matter the architecture.
I had several opportunities to buy on 30A and in fact decided on a centrally located and quiet community on old Hwy 98. There are many very upscale larger communities in sandestin like Kelly plantation and Regatta Bay that rival anything I saw on 30A.
Waiting for enlightnment.:dunno:

dsilvar, I often make the distinction on traffic alone. Add to it the many franchise fast garbage aka food, big box businesses, etc. To me, the area from the Factory Discount Stores to the Destin Pass is like town. From the Factory Discount Stores east to Bay County is more like country, or at least it used to be. Did I mention high rises? There is a huge difference in all of the aforementioned, not to mention there are many more people in the Sandestin/Destin area. I just call em like I see em.

I am glad we have all of those stores not too far away for my off-season trips for goods, but I dread the day they extend all the way to Bay County, connecting the dot in between.

Just goes to show ya, SJ, that beauty IS in the eye of the beholder.
It is ironic really, because I want to be around humanity and good resturaunts and shopping and the Bay and the ocean...all in walking distance. And on occasion, I would like to take a SHORT drive into the country to enjoy the trails and kayaking etc...your neck of the woods.
Sadly I think with sprawl that will likely happen, especially with affordable housing being planned and executed, your "neck of the woods" will be as urban as Destin is..I will have to drive further out..bummer.:sosad:
