Canadian company TransCanada wants to build a nearly 1,600 mile pipeline across the US, to carry toxic, corrosive oil from the tar sands mines in Alberta, Canada to oil refineries in Texas.
If the US State Department approves the project (the Koch brothers supposedly stand to make $$$$ so they are getting a lot of pressure to approve it despite massive opposition from environmental groups), the spill-prone pipeline would endanger homes and farmland in six states, and even worse, Nebraska's Ogallala Aquifer, which provides 30% of our nation's agricultural water, and drinking water to millions.
Producing the tar sands oil has been called the most environmentally destructive project on earth and has already chewed up vast areas of Canadian wilderness, transforming it into a wasteland of toxic lakes and open pit mines.
Now, American lands and waters are threatened as well. Pumping this extra thick and corrosive petroleum causes pipelines to rupture far more frequently than when transporting conventional oil, and tar sands oil spills are already tragically frequent.
In September, 250,000 gallons spilled outside of Chicago. In April of this year, a 1.3 million gallon spill in Alberta, and an 840,000 gallon spill in Michigan. On May 7th, yet another spill in North Dakota. NRDC reports 11 spills from the existing Keystone system just in the last 12 months alone.

I cannot believe that ANYONE can think this is a good idea - these pipelines are carrying NASTY stuff and this company makes BP look like they have a good safety record!
