Props to John McCain

Props to Sen. John McCain for his Opinion piece in today's Washington Post.

It's way past time McCain spoke up in this manner.

I admired him when he was a true GOP Maverick, speaking truth to power--championing immigration reform, calling out earmarks, waste & abuse--genuinely trying to work across the aisle.

After the last presidential election, however, he turned into a sore loser and a bitter old man.

I liked the old-old McCain then, & now I like the new-new McCain.

I didn't like the guy in between.

John McCain - After the shootings, Obama reminds the nation of the golden rule

I agree. I respected McCain a lot before too.

Hopefully, more of his colleagues will take his message to heart. I admire him for submitting the piece and will look forward to seeing him put action to these words as he did to that woman at the campaign town hall meeting when he assured her that President Obama is indeed "a decent, family man who I just happen to have differences of opinion with..."

I agree with you both. It is my hope that he is being real and not just jumping on the next trend he thinks might keep him in office. For the last two years he seemed willing to say anything. But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I was very disappointed in McCain after the election.

When he was initially announced as the GOP candidate I thought I was going to have a hard time deciding who to vote for - as I had great respect for him and the principles (sometimes unpopular, but usually RIGHT at the essential level) he espoused.

Then his campaign basically crashed and burned, but I was so proud of him election night - the epitome of class and dignity. I watched his speech and thought "this is why we are such a great country - this is how the people speak and how we peacefully transfer power and why others in the lands of coups and juntas look at us with awe."

I was really thinking that he and Obama were going to be able to usher in an era of true bi-partisanship that would bring our country together as they cleaned up Washington together (building on the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform act).

Silly, overly optimistic me. That doesn't garner ratings and match the puppet masters' agendas.

I agree with most of what everyone is saying here, but after hearing Obama speak the other night, I have to say we elected the right guy for President and that will become more evident in time.

I hope we see Meghan McCain get into public service one of these days. I just heard her being interviewed about the current situation and she reflected much of what her Dad had said in that op ed piece this weekend...and, she said she is a member of the NRA, but she feels as though there is room for reviewing gun laws in this country; and that there is no reason to have assault weapons with multibullet magazines....she is the voice of the responsible Republican Party as far as I am concerned...too bad some of the so-called leadership in Congress can't follow her example. She makes a lot more sense than many of them. So, maybe they will begin to listen to reasoned voices...
