I am new to SoWal and am dismayed by the next to nothing recycling available. Is anything in the works to change this? Are there any groups advocating for change? I would like to help. This part of the world is so beautiful yet preservation seems to be a low priority. Recycling programs save lots of taxpayer dollars by reducing the cost of solid waste pick- up and disposal.

Contact blubinz and be done with it or you will go crazy. He provides a great service. Otherwise, if you want to learn all there is about the sordid history of Walton County recycling, use the forum search feature.

Read the history and checked out bluebinz which charges a fee. Successful programs around the country charge for garbage pick - up ( per bag) and collect recycling free. There is a fee Waste Management must pay to tip garbage. Recycling on the other hand can be sold . Why is the county dragging their feet on this ?

Cuff.. My vision, if you will, would be to be able to find a space (or build) to use as a Materials Recovery Facility strictly dedicated to recycling.. Basically a warehouse with a few pieces of equipment for the preparation of recyclables to move on to the bigger recyclers. The recyclables themselves, if the area really decided to participate, could pay for the facility and perhaps even turn a profit. As it is, I do have to charge about $3.50 a week because I don't make any money on the back end, save for some aluminum that gets me a little gas money. The guys at the County do the best they can with what they've got right now, which ain't much. I think what it comes down to, is that the state recycling mandates don't apply to Walton County because of it's small population, so they are not required by law to reach a certain diversion percentage of recyclables. In other words, they don't have to implement a real recycling program, and probably don't see the point of having to upgrade equipment and facilities, etc. In short, it's a money thing, although I think it could be done. I would be interested in talking with you anytime, and I certainly do see a day where the area does have a real program, be it county-run or a private company.. Cheers! JM Turner Blu-Binz

Blu binz rocks!

I thought there was some requirement that we had to have a recycling program to get some funding and that was why we had the half hearted convict and blue bag solutions.

Why is it so difficult? Recycling programs have been in effect all over the country for decades. Most of our visitors come from places with recycling. Other tourist areas even have composting programs for the paper towels in their visitor centers.
