being nice to the host/hostess may not get you in faster if there is a wait (and there always is at this time of year), but it will make his/her job more pleasant, and you appear to be more civilized than most.

remember, you are not the only one in the restaurant that is hungry....look around!

eat as you would in your own home (unless you/your kids routinely throw food on the floor, or scatter it across the table).

if the food is good, be happy....if it is bad, speak to the manager (in the same respectable tone you'd want to be spoken to).

if the service is good, thank your server/manager, and leave a tip that is good; if service is great, leave a great tip. Leaving no tip is rude, as is trying to cheat a restaurant out of a free meal/dessert/drink/etc.

if you drink heavily, bring a non-drinking friend (hopefully someone that can keep you from making a fool of yourself). More liquor doesn't make you more attractive to the host/hostess/server/barkeep (whether they are single, or not)....if you hit on my wife/husband, and you're a regular, I'll know, and we'll talk.

money CAN'T buy an earlier table, a night with anyone on the staff, or class....

manners are learned; respect is earned.

just sharing what most of the staff think/feel, but won't share with you for fear of getting stiffed. 'nuff said.

Bless your heart; I never worked in a restaurant, but you just reminded me of my days in retail. Many of the same issues (well, except for the drunk, usually).

Hang in there...the season has a few weeks left, then we can breath until Labor Day Weekend. Been there, I feel your pain.

Thank you! But i also have to pass along a story that happened to me a few days ago. I was having my after work 'Rita at my favorite place to have said 'Rita and a gentleman was standing next to me waiting for his drink. We started talking about local people in the service industry he made a comment that bartenders/servers make loads of money and I informed him that we only make it for "100 Days" out of the year. Then it is hand to mouth until next year. He shook his head, said "wow", put the $2 change in the tip jar and walked away only to return with a $10 to add. Made me believe that there are good folks out there again.

I've always believed that working in the service industry should be a prerequisite for life. I've worked every position in a restaurant, and how customers treat employees and managers can be very revealing as to their true personalities. Please and thank you are powerful statements that are underused barometers of character.

I've heard it said many times that when out on a dinner date, you can learn a lot, good and bad, about a person by how they treat the service personnel. Loud, rude/crude = bad. Polite, understanding = good. Good guideline for evaluating potential lifetime mate.

How someone treats a waitress/waiter/bartender/busboy etc. is VERY revealing about their true character and typical behavior.

So is how they tip. Stingy tipper = selfish in life (and bed).
