Agency Spotlight: South Walton Fire District, Florida
Founded and certified by the USLA since 2006, presently at the advanced level, we present to you the South Walton Fire District Beach Safety Division (SWFD Beach Safety).
SWFD Beach Safety covers 26 miles of the beautiful Emerald Coast in South Walton County. Lifeguard towers are located at beach accesses, as well as at two private resorts, with roving and patrolling capability to respond across all 26 miles of county beachfront. Their full-time staff model includes a director, four lieutenants, eight beach safety officers, 13 full-time lifeguards, and approximately 30 seasonal lifeguards.
This year, SWFD Beach Safety is operating out of a new headquarters which provides expanded storage, with room to grow. Equipment and vehicles include 10 pick-up trucks for emergency response and patient transport, 15 ATVs, four personal rescue watercraft, and several drones.
This agency believes in being embedded in the community to consistently promote beach safety and the wellbeing of South Walton. The annual SWFD Junior Lifeguard Program educates children ages 9-16 about all things beach safety. SWFD lifeguards also provide community CPR training, dedicated coverage for special events, and visit local schools to share information and promote beach safety in the community.
While they focus heavily on public education and prevention of drowning, on-duty lifeguards have robust EMS capabilities and can respond to any emergency on or near the beach. Since the founding of the Beach Safety Division, SWFD lifeguards have worked to develop an efficient flow of patient care and emergency response among themselves, advanced life support crews, and their 911 Telecommunications Center. This helps improve patient outcomes and provides an elevated level of emergency services for beach patrons. SWFD’s Mission is “Prompt, Competent, Caring Response in Time of Need,” and their lifeguards strive to embody that every day.
SWFD is actively looking to hire more lifeguards ahead of the summer for full-time lifeguard positions (includes benefits package), as well as the seasonal roles. If you’re looking for a career as an open water lifeguard, be sure to check them out.
