SWFD announcement
Apr 13 2022
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ---
South Walton Fire District’s Emergency Communications Center now has the capability to determine a 911 caller’s location using the what3words app.
This free smartphone app has the potential to make a lifesaving difference in our community, thanks to its ability to precisely locate someone experiencing an emergency, no matter where they are.
Here's how it works: Creators of the what3words app have divided the entire world into 10 ft. x 10 ft. squares and assigned each square a unique combination of three words. When a street address may not accurately describe the location of an emergency, or if a caller is unsure of their exact location, this app will give the caller the three words associated with their location, which can be relayed to SWFD dispatchers the same way as a street address. Dispatchers will then use the three words to send emergency services to the caller's location.
We are hoping the use of this app will become especially helpful for locating emergency calls at the beach, as well as within our local state parks and forests. This offers a new level of precision to emergency services and we're very excited to introduce it to the community as part of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
