From what I've seen of auto racing crashes over the years, the longer and more spectacular a crash looks, the better the chance of survival, provided the cabin of the car remains intact. Physics of it all say that you're decelerating in those circumstances and the more energy/momentum you can bleed off before you hit something that makes you come to a full stop, the better off you are.
The times when it's bad are when you hit a retaining wall straight on at 200+ mph.
