From what I've seen of auto racing crashes over the years, the longer and more spectacular a crash looks, the better the chance of survival, provided the cabin of the car remains intact. Physics of it all say that you're decelerating in those circumstances and the more energy/momentum you can bleed off before you hit something that makes you come to a full stop, the better off you are.
The times when it's bad are when you hit a retaining wall straight on at 200+ mph.

Pretty funn trip, but once is enough, or maybe once a decade. I could go again now.Scary! I like how he walked up to the finish line! Great attitude!

Carl Edwards mentioned after the race, how much he would like NASCAR to remove the restrictor plates from the cars at DEGA. This would only launch the cars further into the stands. We know that would only make the race more deadly. Carl is a good racer and nice guy, but maybe he needed to calm down and relax a little before he made this statement. He doestn't want this, I don't believe.
