This was brought up in another thread and I'd like to know what other people think about it.

When you send someone a nice gift, and don't receive a thank-you note (or at least acknowledgement of the gift), what do you do? Do you just let it go, or is there a tactful way to bring up the matter without making the person feel bad?

I never expect a thank you note in return for any gift. Why would you need to bring it up unless you were uncertain that the gift was delivered?

It's not necessarily gratitude I expect. I'd just like to know the gift got where it was headed.

Gotcha. In that case, after enough days have passed without you hearing back, I would contact the recipient, and let them know that you were just checking to make sure they received the gift. I'm sure the number of days to wait may vary upon the occasion.

i agree with sj, don't expect a thank you note, a lot of people just don't seem to do that anymore. i see nothing wrong with checking to see if they go the gift tho.

I guess I'm an old grouch.
I know it's the thought that counts and we should selflessly give gifts expecting no kind of reciprocity blah blah blah.
And it's not like I go around with some sort of Miss Manners check list in my head of who has been naughty or nice.
Still, I think it's kinda sad if thankyou notes now seem to be considered quaint and passe.`
My kid got some nice checks in the mail for HS graduation and he is writing notes to each and every gift-giver.
But if a person can't be bothered with that, they could at least email or pick up the phone.
