The candidates that lack the education, experience, and/or insight to lead and pay to make themselves palatable to the voters. The ones who attempt to attach themselves to the "coat-tails" of the candidates with proven leadership ability and popular appeal.

I heard that one person on the board was for Hudson and the other four were for Osborne. The one for Hudson argued against any endorsement because his
candidate didn't win a majority.

Endorsements

These endorsements have really become problematic this election cycle.

It seems as if each endorsement is met with immediate denunciation by supporters of the candidate who did not receive it. Rick Brown's endorsement by the Fraternal Order of Police was quickly discounted by the supporters of other candidates.

Each of the candidates strives for these endorsements, but their supporters declare they are "sour grapes" when they don't receive them. Seems kinda petty to me.

Do you really believe this? Are you familiar with all the lists that one can pay to be included in as "the best of the best", i.e. academic achievement, legal representatives, et al? If you have followed the news, the local bloggers, the local internet chat boards over the past decade you would realize that some of these "endorsed" candidates have not been supportive of many of what everyone now seems to see as the progress in the south end of Walton, especially in the school system. I would say that all that money given to professional perception managers or campaign managers that don't even live in this county has certainly paid off for certain candidates.

I question what you are referring to. ECAR doesn't have people pay for "the best of the best" type of lists. I can understand if you are referring to magazines and internet sites, which often have only advertisers "win" those Best Of lists, but this thread subject is Emerald Coast Association of Realtors. Are you suggesting that the endorsed candidates bought the votes of the ECAR Board?

Often you will find that high-timed legislators will become associated with these political consulting firms. The candidate can pretty much depend on the support of that leader to be transferred to his corner. Now, the problem for an old cynic like myself is that I don't think we are actually getting leaders, we are getting office holders who have been imaged by others.

FYI, SJ, I have family members in both the real estate communities and political consulting business so I am not hitting on these groups. I'm just an old civics teacher who worries about the future of our democracy.

I believe this thread is about Emerald Coast Association of Realtors. Your posts infer that the ECAR Board is paid off to endorse candidates. That is far from the truth. I understand that there are often other ties of the Good Ole Boy network, especially in local poliTRICKS, but that may be better suited for another thread, which you are more than welcome to start. I might even join in on that discussion. I would encourage you to start that new thread, rather than tainting the already tainted image that we often face as Realtors. It would be much appreciated.

They only seem to be problamatic to a few of the candidates supporters. I participated in the ECAR Q&A in Freeport to place my vision and insight before their membership. The panel conducting the Q&A was open and insightful and I enjoyed the exchange. They chose to make a recommendation to the ECAR Board and the Board decided not to endorse a Candidate in the D5 race. Only those people can explain their action if they chose to do so, beyond that everythings seems to speculation and conspiracy theory.

No temper tantrum from me - You win some and you loose some.

The Candidates have definitely moved beyond this - everyone else should as well.

I'd like to expand on InletBeachDweller's response from (Emerald Coast Association of Realtors) ECAR, in post #5 above.

ECAR's endorsements are made by the ECAR Board of Directors. Before the Board determines their endorsements, they have a Screening Committee, made up of concerned members from North and South Walton, and North and South Okaloosa. Please keep in mind that ECAR is made up of two counties, Okaloosa and Walton Counties. The Screening Committee bases its choice of candidates on real estate and Realtor related issues. They could care less about the candidates' choice of political party and they don't even give weight to whether or not a candidate is a Realtor or a broker. (When you consider that they chose to support Robert Nelson (non-Realtor) over a licensed South Walton Realtor, you see proof of this.) ECAR has decided to not endorse candidates in Judicial Races, which would include the Sheriff's Race. They feel that it could potentially cause a conflict of interest if ECAR was donating PAC money to a candidate who wins. Then ECAR members could potentially be asking for favorable consideration in Court cases, which could then be overturned on appeal. They don't want to go there, and I applaud them for that.

Regarding specifically the Walton County BCC, District 5 race, the ECAR Screening Committe initially selected Bob Hudson as their recommendation to the Board for endorsement. The Board was divided 50/50 between Bob Hudson and Alan Osborne. The President, living in Niceville, Okaloosa County, abstained from voting for the Walton County endorsement in this tie. With such a division of choice, the Board didn't feel that they should endorse a candidate for this race. The ECAR Board has to present a unified front, and they weren't unified, so they decided to not to endorse either candidate.

I hope this clears up any rumors. If you would like further explanations from ECAR, I'd suggest you speak with Cliff Long, Government Affairs Director for ECAR.
