Subject: Planning Commission

Commissioners and Staff:

We were asked if a paid county employee could serve on the Planning Commission. As you know, Rick Wilson was appointed contingent upon that determination. Although there is no statutory prohibition against an employee serving on the Board, our code prohibits such an appointment. LDC Section 9.04.02, states
  • 9.04.02. - Membership.
The Walton County Planning Commission shall consist of seven members appointed by the Board of County Commissioners of Walton County, with one member to be nominated by each of the County Commissioners, and two members to be appointed at large. All members shall be residents of Walton County. No member shall be a paid or elected employee of the County.
(Emphasis added).

His appointment was for District 2, so at the December 22, 2015 meeting, Commissioner Jones will need to nominate a replacement. We apologize for not catching that sentence on Tuesday night. Thanks,

Mark.

Unbelievable. I was shocked by many things that occurred at the meeting December 8 but the cavalier attitude towards such an important appointment as representing a commissioner on the planning department was near the top of the most shocking list. It was sort of like the old Life cereal commercial. "Let Mikey eat it, he'll eat anything." " Let Rick be on the Planning Commission, he can film it at the same time and he'll do anything we tell him to do" or something like that. No wonder the Comp Plan and Code is so screwed up with attitudes like that.

Why didn't the Commissioner (C. Jones) take the time to look at the County Code Prior to nominating a Paid County Employee for the appointment...

Isn't that a bit of common sense, check the "rule book" before you run a play?

...unless you don't play by the rules or are not professional and organized enough to do so.

Either way, this could have / should have been handled Before.

Her handlers probably forgot to check.

I'd see a lot more importance of the planning commission if they could actually deny or stop projects, it they can only pass along a recommendation.

Were you to attend the Planning Department meetings, you'd have a better appreciation for what those members who actually do their homework contribute. In particular, David Kramer and Suzanne Harris do their homework for EVERY meeting, and they come prepared to ask questions that would otherwise almost certainly never come to light, net effect being enlightenment of the public about aspects of the proposals which would be kept quiet to our ultimate detriment as residents. We need more people like those two on that and every board, and we especially need such people as David, Suzanne and Cindy Meadows on the BCC that ultimately decides these issues, assuming no lawsuits. That assumption is a large and important caveat, given the abysmal history or Walton County government.

Danny Glidewell and Bill Fletcher are two such individuals. While Danny is in the wrong district for the upcoming election, Bill is a viable challenger to Chapman. Both men deserve our support in whatever election they might choose to offer themselves to our service. If Suzanne indeed challenges Imfeld, she too deserves our support. Those three are incorruptible, intelligent, interested and involved in community affairs and COMMUNITY service, as opposed to SELF-service. We need them and more like them, and Tuesday was ample evidence of the acuteness of our need.
