I have a question and would appreciate any help or advice you all may have.

We purchased a new TV about 3 years ago for about $400 (small flat screen) - we declined extended warranty - suddenly about 3 weeks ago TV just stopped working - something in it died - even pushing buttons on it feels wierd - I called Philips and they said I could send it in and they would diagnose problem and solve it BUT I have to pay $320 and it does not matter what is wrong with TV......so, does anyone know of anyone locally who could look at a TV and try fix it???

I do not want to trash it but nor do I want to spend $320 to get it fixed!!!!

Thanks for your advice!

The advice seen here before is TVs these days are not worth fixing once they're out of warranty. Sad but true. I hope you find out otherwise.

Probably true but the good news is you can probably replace it for less than what you paid originally. I know many of you aren't Walmart fans but they do have really good prices on small flat screens. My step dad works for Walmart in the pharmacy and they buy a lot there b/c they get a 10% discount. My point is they have a flat screen in every room and they all work and some are at least 4 years old.

If you can get up with him, Larry at 892-3444 is a great tv repair guy. You need to talk to him and you would have to bring it to DeFuniak.

There are some in your predicament that salvage some dollars by listing on ebay
listing all the problems of course

Buyer usually pays shipping so you arent out any money, it brings in some dollars to put to a new one.

Part of the problem is even where to trouble shoot in the circuits, and if its a chip controller, then how or where to get the part

Like computers its a whole part replacement, which as stated before gets into too much trouble and expense

It is a shame in this throw away society

It's pretty much not worth getting an appliance repaired. You could buy a new one for about what the repairs would cost. Daughter's dryer was bought at a great sale at Best Buy for $250 four years ago. It doesn't work now. Well, the repair people in Atlanta want $100 just to look at it, plus whatever it costs to repair it. So we're buying her a new one.:bang:

The magazine insert in the Sunday paper had an article on this. For small appliances, replace anything that's not under warranty. For large appliances, repair any time the repair bill is less than 30-40% of the price of replacement.

It irritates me no end that we are such a disposable society. I was raised by a father who fixed things until they wore out. Now nothing gets the chance to fall apart with age--it's been long since disposed of before that ever happens. :bang:

We just had a TV repairman out today. "Mr TV" out of either Panama City or Panama City Beach. Our large rear projection TV started having issues with "convergence" a couple of weeks ago. While it is nearly five years old, which is ancient in today's society, and we do want a 60-inch (or larger :D) plasma or lcd on the wall in the living room, we have too much else to pour $$$$ into right now. $365 for new chips and a service call. We liked him so much, we may even get the cracked screen fixed now (which I don't even see anymore 'cos I'm used to it, but everyone else who visits my home freaks out).
