I was an auto tehcnician for many years. It is nearly impossible to buy a lemon these days. Just about any car on the road will drive just fine for 10 years or 200k with just routine maintenance and the occasional repair. Quaity is not the issue.
Every maker makes at least 1 really good car or truck.
Ford redesigned the Mustang, you probably see 59 of those a day. How can they not be making money? F150s and Mustangs are freaking everywhere. The product sells.
GM has vehicles on the road. Lots of Trucks, mid-size cars. Cadilliac is a money maker for sure, and Hummer sells very high all over the world
Dodge has some of the best looking models on the road. The 300, the big trucks, and the Challenger is an awesome looking machine.
Does a company in trouble take a risk like the Challenger??? Even if it does sell well it's not a company saver.
The big 3 are not in trouble.

Actually, I did read a good part of Mark Levin's book at the urging of a family member, who voted for Obama, and we banter over policy because deep down inside we are still moderate Republicans.
After reading the book and getting past his tirade and that Liberals are evil, based on his fascist view of statism, Mr. Levin fails to see that he and everyone else who agrees with him are by definition statists as well. His belief that religion should be in politics affirms that alone. A Constitutional Lawyer should know that it was religious tyranny that the Founders were escaping from.
One of the reasons I voted for Obama was because I believe that we, as a Republic are not perfect, and as I have grown older, I believe that we all have much to learn from one another. So, while you may call it playing nice nice with the enemy, I call it the ability to be diplomatic in the face of conflict, a trait Obama possesses.
Republicans expanded their powers so vastly the last 8 years and have instituted the most egregious acts of statism in this Country's history that it was very difficult for me to to give credence to Levin's more concrete values of Conservatism.
We are all entitled to our opinions and now you have mine.
1999 Tahoe - put into service Spring 1998:
minor repairs/maintenance until 83K miles - new transmission.
Water pump, starter, radiator patch, hoses, belts......something with the gear shifter (can't recall, but couldn't get it out of park without a fight so always had to park it in N)
Odd repair was the driver and front passenger doors had to get new hinges at the same time (heavy doors)
A/C work and then new A/C from about 120K-150K miles
repair work on 4X4 at 188K miles
All of these repairs were over $250......you can imagine what $$ I put into it with a transmission, water pump isn't a cheap repair, neither is the starter. Those door hinges were expensive and yes the A/C was as well.
Now has 190K miles and I still digg it.
A neighbor had the same truck and all of his repairs were electrical and lot of it. He finally sold it and bought the Lexus SUV.
2004 Touareg - drive shaft at 40K miles
Lots of minor things......now the horn doesn't work and it has two modules they claim both need replacing at only 50K miles and I don't exactly stand on the horn. Computer doesn't work properly, trim peeled off. Hesitation in the accelerator and jumpy/jerky. Not my favorite car.
Dodge has done an outstanding job with their new vehicles, from the Magnum to the Challenger and the Charger - those trucks, too! All sexy.
Ford has a great ad right now for the F150!!
Chrysler was such a success story in the late 70's/80's, but they only borrowed approx. $300M (a lot for then). We made a profit on that loan to them.
I am hopeful they can pull out of this. I agree that they aren't in as big of trouble as has been made out; however, their numbers didn't start crashing overnight last year. They had the warning signs. And, unfortunately they are always trying to please/appease the UAW!

Interesting map of the Chrysler closings. So was Chrysler over saturating it's market or what? This represents only about 25% of their total dealerships. Two are here in the panhandle, Lee Jeep and one in PC.

Apologize, as I don't remember exactly which car company they specialized in, but months and months ago Papa Scooterbug was telling me about their local car dealership who had been questioned about their future - the response was that because they outright owned their building and had focused on customer service/repair they were golden and could weather any financial storm.
As this mess continues to unravel, it seems more and more that the "old school" values and the "old fashioned" business practices people scoffed at are winning out over giant corporate businesses and "livin large".

I was wondering how closing dealerships saves Chrysler money? I thought dealerships were franchise operations.
They still require a level of support from Chrysler. If the company is not performing up to a minimum level it would cost dollars to support them.
Ford Motor did this back in the 90's. Going through and not renewing franchises and consolidating into larger dealerships. It was spread out over five or so years.
