National Rip Current Awareness Week is June 5-11
rip_current.jpg
Rip currents are the leading surf hazard for all beachgoers and account for more than 80% of beach rescues each year. Rip currents are powerful channels of fast-moving water that can be found along any shore that has breaking waves. They are very common in Florida and can be found along our beaches at any time during the year. Look for:

  • a channel of churning, choppy water
  • an area with a notable difference in the color of the water
  • a line of foam or debris moving steadily seaward
  • a break in the incoming wave pattern
The South Walton TDC is committed to beach safety and recently produced public service announcements, currently airing on WMBB Channel 13, WJHG Channel 7 and Beach TV. Filmed at the Van Ness Butler, Jr. regional beach access, the spots warn of the Gulf of Mexico’s potential dangers to swimmers due to rip current formation and how to spot and escape rip currents. They also explain the color-coded beach safety flag system. Beachgoers can text the word "beachflag" to 77007 to receive daily updates on surf conditions for the duration of their stay. Additionally, an aerial banner warning beachgoers of dangerous rip currents will be deployed under extreme surf conditions. For more information on rip currents, visit www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov.

TDC Beach Crew Member Recognized for Heroic Actions
johnathan.jpg
Johnathan Hastings of the TDC's beach maintenance team, was presented a public service award by the South Walton Fire District for his actions in reporting the fire at the Inlet Beach Access on May 6. It was only his second day of work when Johnathan noticed smoke at the Inlet Beach boardwalk, and not only alerted the fire department, but also roused the couple sleeping in the structure next door to alert them of danger. A native of Bay Minette, Alabama, Johnathan is a student at the University of South Alabama where he is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. This is his second summer with the TDC, and he is a genuine asset to the beach maintenance team.

Loyal Fall Visitors Wanted for Story
Although it's not yet officially summer, we’re already thinking ahead to fall. The TDC’s public relations firm, Curley & Pynn, is crafting a news release to promote visitation to South Walton during the fall shoulder season and wants your input in telling the story. Do you have loyal fall visitors who return annually? If so, we'd like to interview them about making fall memories in South Walton. This is a wonderful opportunity to perhaps recognize some of your most loyal visitors in a public forum. If you have a family to recommend, please contact Elisa Smith at esmith@beachesofsouthwalton.com by Monday, June 13.
