Walton County commissioners have approved Toni Craig to serve as the new county attorney.
Commissioners selected Craig from among seven applicants at their meeting Tuesday.
Craig now serves as assistant Bay County attorney.
She has 14 years legal experience, according to her application for the job.
Besides practicing marital and family law, she has served as attorney for the cities of Fort Walton Beach and Laurel Hill and for the North Okaloosa, Holley-Navarre and Dorcas fire districts.
Among other achievements, Craig listed on her application her litigation of an administrative action against the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice regarding pre-trial detention costs and her representation of Fort Walton Beach in settlement negotiations with the state Department of Environmental Protection.
She received her law degree from Florida State University.
Craig will replace Lynn Hoshihara, who resigned amid controversy over the Chat Holley Road land deal last November.
Hoshihara was criticized in an independent review of the land deal for having limited experience. She had worked as an attorney for five years when she was promoted to Walton County’s attorney.
Hoshihara’s salary was $95,000.
On her application, Craig listed $106,000 as her expected salary.
Commissioners will consider an employment agreement with Craig at a special meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the courthouse in DeFuniak Springs.
