DEFUNIAK SPRINGS ? Walton County Tax Collector Rhonda Skipper has teamed with Bid4Assets to begin on-line Tax Certificate Sales in Walton County in the summer.
Tax Certificate sales are the purchase of a property tax lien on real estate parcels whose owners have not paid their annual taxes. The process allows the County Tax Collector to collect virtually one hundred percent of taxes levied, and gives added time for the delinquent taxpayer to repay. The Tax Certificate Sale is conducted as a reverse auction, in that the investor who bids the lowest interest rate wins the right to buy the certificate. The intended outcome is to create as low a burden as possible for the delinquent taxpayer to eventually repay.
The statutory timetable for Tax Certificate Sales is the same for every county statewide, set to begin in early summer after that year?s delinquency list is advertised. This presented a challenge to prospective investors who had to be physically present, and to counties like Walton who had to host venues for sales that attracted many bidders.
A local on-site bidder training session has been scheduled for April 25 at 9 a.m. at the Okaloosa Walton College-DeFuniak Springs Campus Computer Lab, Room 202.
The auction Web site is available at walton.taxsale.com, or from the tax collectors official Web site at www.waltontaxcollector.com.
