LETTER: Beach rights and access

Posted May 27, 2016 at 1:00 AM

The public’s right to access and continue to “customarily use” the beaches is being jeopardized by the few that own near or on the beach.

The posting of “private beach and no trespassing” signs on the beach is a cynical attempt to discourage beachgoers from enjoying their “customary right” to use of all the beaches.

It is also alarming that two proposed public beach access projects have recently been stopped by beach area owners.

One of these is the proposed Walton Dunes Regional Access which would be the only TDC Regional Beach Access with convenient parking and restrooms between Seagrove Beach and Inlet Beach.

The 240-foot public beachfront at Walton Dunes is unique due to its level terrain which would provide easier access for elderly, physically challenged, and families with small children.

The addition of a restroom at Walton Dunes would also allow the county to add a much needed lifeguard at this location.

Arguments opposing this public beach access have been predominantly disingenuous and misleading.

Contrary to claims of opponents, the road to this access does not go through any neighborhoods: This is the main road to all the condos and developments in the area.

The installation of this public access will have far less environmental impact than the surrounding private condos, driveways, houses and parking lots.

The proposed bathrooms and parking have been environmentally designed to only impact the low dunes on the east end of the property where beachgoers have trampled and eroded the vegetation and dunes.

The larger dunes on the west section will be restored, preserved and stabilized, including planting indigenous vegetation.

The new walkover will keep foot traffic off the vegetation and dunes.

The protective function of these Primary Frontal Dunes will be enhanced.

On June 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the 331 South Walton Beach annex, the public will have an opportunity to voice support for the proposed Walton Dunes Regional Beach Access.
