West Nile is back in our area and strong. The health department is putting South Walton under a mosquito illness alert. Over the last two weeks, we have had six positive chickens caring the West Nile Virus. Due to the time of the year, the health department has determined it would be wise for the people of South Walton to be aware of the situation.
The type of mosquito that carries this particular virus is container breeding mosquitoes. This means many of the mosquitoes in your yard are growing due to standing water. Many plants hold water, and it doesn’t take very much wanted to breed mosquitoes. South Walton Mosquito Control District is asking everyone to take the time and survey their yard to ensure you have no standing water to entice the female mosquito to lay her eggs.
We are currently asking everyone to follow The 5 D’s of Protection
1. DRAIN- Containers in your yard.
2. DRESS- Wear light colored loose fitting clothing.
3. DUSK-Avoid outdoor activities during these times.
4. DAWN- Avoid outdoor activities during these times.
5. DEFEND- Choose a repellant such as DEET.
If you would like one of our technicians to come out and inspect your yard, please call our office between 7:30 and 3:30 850-267-2112 and schedule a service request, or you can go to our website and click on the red button in the top right-hand side and schedule a service request.
