Does anyone find it ironic that the TDC and Taylor Engineering, Inc state that the meandering outlets of the Lakes destroys the Dune systems? I guess they think that building on top of the dune systems has nothing to do with that. They probably think that the seawalls built on many properties, including the State's beaches, is the perfect answer, and they will use a bunch of money to direct Mother Nature at Western Lake. Any comments on that?

By the way, at the next WalCo Commissioners mtg, Nov 27, in Defuniak, the County Attorney has the following item on the agenda:

Coastal Armoring License Agreements
a.Johnnie Ross Malone Family Trust B
b.Roberta James and Kathy Ann James
c.Catherine Rodwell

I believe that "license agreement" gives permission for the homeowners, who built their seawalls on the public beach, to keep their seawalls on the public beach, at least until the DEP makes a ruling on their temporary permit status which Walton County screwed up, when misstating the rules to the Gulf-front property owners.

Where did you see this as it is interesting? I know this was discussed in 1998-1999, but had not heard of that recently.

The TDC's position is more than a little ironic. The dune lake outlets are not endangering the dunes. The only thing they endanger is property adjacent to the outlets where structures are too close to the outlets or where property owners want to build on lots they own that should never have been sold for development in the first place.
These positions that the TDC has been taking lately, like this one and their statement last summer affirming private ownership of the beach, benefit a few property owners at the expense of those property owners who happen to own off the beach. It conflicts with tourism.
While we are on the subject, the TDC is building that big parking lot at WaterColor for the access between WaterColor and Seaside, the access that leads to two privately owned beaches that the TDC has affirmed are in fact private. I wonder what will happen there this summer? You will arrive at the beach via that access and the be confronted by security guards on each side? :dunno:

It is discussed on www.BeachtoBay.org, but I now notice that it doesn't have a date. EmeraldCoastDave posted the link in the thread about him wanting to dig a canal from the Intracoastal to the Gulf. I had not heard about this until I read his link, but it wouldn't surprise me much if it was happening today. So did the TDC change its position on this thought of the Lakes destroying the dunes, rather than the actual developments on the dune systems destroying the dunes?

The other part about the County giving license agreements to the people who built their emergency seawalls on the public's deeded beach, is happening on Nov 27, 2007 at the BCC mtg in Defuniak Springs. At least, it is on the official agenda.

Please note the date on the link from Beach to Bay. That was part of a report written in 1999 and was never enacted. Starting in 2000, the County through the TDC and under the eye of an on-staff coastal scientisyt conducted a 3-year feasibility study that highlighted beach restoration for Western Walton County and it was completed in 2007. Now a second phase is planned for eastern Walton County but NO ARMORING is planned at the outfalls and no work at all around the Western Lake Outfall. Visit www.protectwaltoncountybeaches.com for more info.

IMO, it sure would be nice if that website was up to date.

As for the beaches being public at WaterColor, there is a public use easement on the beach that was dedicated many years ago as part of the original development and is shown on the plat, so it's not an access to nowhere.

That is good news!

Maybe we should hand out copies of the plat with each parking place :D

Beach to Bay hasn't had the web site updated lately but continues to have archived information, it's always good to know the history of ideas however.
Btw new jetties or the armouring of outlets is prohibited bythe state. Wish I could quote the Florida Statue number put not off the top of my head.

Thanks for popping in here, SoapPedaler. I think it is great to have the archived important decisions, but can you add the dates to those? I see the update for Oyster Lake actually has a date for the link, but I don't see dates of publish for the archived info.
