The scenes with the ball bouncing down the stairs and the tape recording of the ghost child still give me chills. I recommend it to anyone wanting a really well written and acted scary movie. And yes, the ending was a little overdone.

Supposedly the bouncing red ball scenes actually happened. Ooooh!
I really wish I had saved the magazine article I read about the story behind the movie. (This was before the internet.) I can't remember why they filmed in Seattle/Vancouver instead of Denver, could just be the fact that back in 1980 Denver really was a cowtown with few filming amenities. I do know that the original house (on 13th Avenue!) has long been torn down.
I agree about George C. Scott, what a fine actor.
I am glad that the movie is on DVD now. Just might buy it.
This is the only movie that I can ever remember making my husband jump in his seat (hint: towards the beginning, when Scott first sees the house).

Oh, another one, but you'll all be mad because I can't for the life of me remember what the name was. It was a foreign film--Dutch or French I think--about this man who snatched a young woman at a gas station and buried her alive. There was a remake of it with Kiefer Sutherland but I bet it wasn't near as scary as the original.

I've been wracking my brains all weekend trying to think of the name of this movie and it finally came to me: THE VANISHING (Spoorloos in its original Dutch). Very creepy movie, especially the ending.

Not to bring up painful news- but whatever happened to John Bobbit? Did his, um, favorite part get reattached? I can't remember the end of that story!
Funny that you guys would mention him, my husband and I went to a Halloween party last night dressed as the Bobbits.....it was great...

You've piqued my curiosity - can you elaborate a little on how you achieved the look??? (My alter ego lindabobbitt still needs a costume idea for tomorrow!)

Sure! We got lots of laughs. For myself, I wore a gown that I splattered with fake blood (bottle 'O blood from Wal-mart), and slippers. I carried a bloodied knife and a clear container with a blood-covered Kielbasa in it. (I asked my husband if he wanted me to carry a Vienna sausage or a Kielbasa......I'm sure you can imagine his answer!!!) My hubby wore a white T-shirt blood splattered and a pair of P.J.'s that I bloodied in the crotch area. It's actually a very simple outfit for a couple but gets lots of attention!!

Yes, that was a good one!
An American version of The Vanishing was made, which was not nearly as good.
But sometimes I prefer American versions, as in The Ring versus its original, the Japanese movie Ringu.

Hmmmm, he didn't choose the little vienna sausage? Too funny. We'll definitely have to keep that costume idea in mind for an adult party next year (just don't think it would be as effective as a solo costume.)

Yes, an adults only costume . It would NOT be a good singleton costume. I stayed pretty close to John Wayne Bobbit, if not, I got plenty of weird looks from people........probably wondered why I was carrying a bloody weeny!

You guys missed one:

The Birds.

That is one of my favorites! I also like the 1970s "Kingdom of the Spiders" with William Shatner.
