I wouldn't be surprised, companies don't make these decisions overnight. But as far as Scott's involvement is concerned, clearly his follow through helped seal the deal. I doubt Sunk would be up in Canada today doing the same - she would be too busy running around the state doing damage control over all the tax increases she would have implemented. :D

Looks good now, but you're only going to get so far poaching other peoples' high tech jobs while gutting your own K-12 and higher ed budgets. California will remain strong as long as their big universities remain solvent. Because, sorry, but neither Texas nor Florida has anything close to the UC system, Stanford, USC and CalTech level of consistent high tech/cutting edge done at the volume you get out there. Not saying the Florida and Texas system don't do good R&D, but neither state has a flagship that can come close to a Berkley or CalTech in terms of prestiege or nearby tech spinoff potential. (UT-Austin is good, but it's no Silicon Valley.)

You know, at one time Silicon Valley did not exist. Is it just possible that something as good or beneficial could replace it? I think so, but then I have a grandson who is an engineer, educated in a very good engineering program at OSU who has gone to Bakersfield for a job, so who knows. To think that anything at Berkley leads the nation is suspect at the least. As far as the "gutting" of our K-l2 is concerned, I think that is a liberal stretch.

I think, the weather, social climate, and the availability of good weed will prevent a mass exodus from Californicatia. As far as Berkley rankings, need I say more:

Berkeley's undergraduate program is ranked first as the top public university among "National Universities" in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.[40]

Internationally, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked Berkeley 2nd in 2010. In terms of "fields" Berkeley is ranked 2nd in Natural Sciences and Mathematics, 3rd in Engineering/Technology and Computer, 16th in life and agricultural sciences, 31st in clinical medicine and pharmacy, and 5th in Social Sciences. In its "subject" ranking, Berkeley is ranked 2nd in Mathematics, 5th in Physics, 1st in Chemistry, 3rd in Computer Science and 5th in Economics/Business.[41]

The 2011 Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed Berkeley 8th and the QS World University Rankings placed Berkeley 28th in the world.[42][43] (In 2010 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and QS World University Rankings parted ways to produce separate rankings.) In the 2006 international edition of Newsweek, Berkeley was the fifth-ranked global university,[44] and the Center for Measuring University Performance placed Berkeley ninth among national research universities.[45]

Berkeley's undergraduate program is ranked 2nd by The Washington Monthly and 22nd among National Universities by U.S. News & World Report.[46][47] U.S. News ranked both the undergraduate programs in engineering and business 3rd in the nation.[48][49] Berkeley ranks 9th among universities that have produced the largest number of living billionaires.[50]

According to the US News & World Report Subject Rankings, Berkeley is ranked 4th in Arts & Humanities, 3rd in Engineering & IT, 5th in Life Sciences and Biomedicine, 5th in Natural and Physical Sciences, and 5th in Social Sciences.

The Princeton Review ranks Berkeley as a college with a conscience[51] and the 5th best value in public colleges.[52]

The College Sustainability Report Card, published by the Sustainable Endowments Institute, gave Berkeley a B in 2009 for its efforts in environmental sustainability.[53]

Putting down Berkley's science & technology chops really does show an amazing ignorance of the players in the technology revolution in America. Look at their involvement in a single project like Lawrence Livermore Labs, and compare it to what you find in Texas or Florida.

Thanks for the clarification on the wonders of Berkley. It is obvious I was wrong in my assumption. But it is also obvious that Berkley is a main seat of liberalism, a societal idea with which I disagree. At least that is what I read and have been told. I am glad to know beachmouse thinks I'm ignorant in regard to the field of technology. I am certainly behind times in that regard but not exactly ignorant of varied forms of technology. If you cannot find good technology programs in both Florida and Texas, I would be amazed but I am not going to spend my time researching them. As I have said many times I'll leave the research to you intelligent, informed individuals that can manipulate the computer keys better than me and believe every they read.

I know a very accomplished very conservative person who got an advanced engineering degree from Berkley back in the 60s. Yeah, he really hated the politics of some of his fellow classmates, but he has no regrets about attending Berkley.
