My husband and I are coming back down early next week, weather permitting, I know the tropics are being watched. Are the black flies biting down there now? Or has anyone seen signs of the love bugs yet? Have had to deal with the huge amount of mosquitoes here where we live due to so much rain all summer, don't want have to deal with more biting things down there. And the love bugs are a nuisance also.

No Black flies - they usually come in with north winds in off season. No love bugs yet. We are just starting to get our second wave of yellow flies.

If you live here contact mosquito control. They will deliver a black beach ball, hang it in an appropriate place in the yard, and coat it with a sticky substance. It works great and you get to watch the little buggers suffer as they starve to death.

The yellow flies are becoming less frequent, although they are still here. On my porch, I keep a bottle of alcohol and a bottle of windex. As soon as you're bit, apply alcohol liberally and then spray with windex. Yes, you'll still have a bite, but it won't itch as often. I think the key is to dry it out immediately. I don't have near the itching later on if I do this. Sometimes I even 'scratch in' the alcohol if it starts to itch right away. Also, if I know there is one around, I move around, wave my swatter and they will flock to you whereby you can beat the **** out of them before they get you. AND MAKE SURE THEY'RE DEAD! i've seen them get up and fly off after i've hit them!! Yes, I torture them, pull a wing off and feed the lizards on the porch. BE on the OFFENSIVE! To hell with yellow flies!

Can you just drink the alcohol instead? May not be as affective but it is sure a lot more fun.

When I first moved here around 2001 I used to develop welts like golf balls and not just itch, but actually ache, for three full days. Twelve years later, I don't notice them much anymore. They do itch but it's not much worse than an ant bite and it only lasts about three hours. You get used to it after a while.

Plus, as Andy said, drinking the alcohol helps immensely--on a number of fronts.

Well, I'm drinking the other alcohol. Beach Lover, you don't get awakened in the middle of the night with the itch?? Once you scratch, it's ON LIKE KONG! I get so mad at myself if I accidentally scratch and then can't stop scratching. I find the alc/windex helps with that future itch. I got bit on the bottom of the foot a couple of weeks ago and never scratched it until I woke up itching...almost pulled by big toenail off the other foot ! Then thought seriously about looking for a cinder block to see if I couldn't scrape the bottom of my foot off. :pissed::wave:

I've heard toothpaste can be very effective. You let it dry on the bite and it'll pull some of whatever causes the itch out.

Also a paste of water and baking soda for those that don't use tooth paste.
