just had a quick lunch at El Mercadito on Hwy 28 and wanted to let everyone know how good it was. I don't understand why there was not a line out of the door. We had 2 tacos - one beef and one tongue. The tongue was very tender and juicy but the beef was slightly more flavorful. We also had one pupusa that was filled with pork, beans, and cheese and served with a bright vinegary slaw. The pupusa had a crispy crunchy exterior and a moist greasy (in a good way) center. The bite of the slaw balanced the richness of the pupusa. We also had two tamales. One was your tradtional cornhusk/pork and masa tamale and the other was wrapped in banana leaf. The traditional tamale was great with that delicious roasted corn flavor but the highlight of the meal was the banana leaf wrapped tamale. Every time I've had one of these it has been sort of sweet and not so great. I have a feeling that I'm going to dreaming about this damn tamale for quite some time. Not only was the masa rich, moist and flavorful but the pork filling was also melt in your mouth moist and delicious, This is one of the best things that I've ever tasted in my life and I've eaten some really good food.

I'm thinking that I will have to stop at El Mercadito on my way back to NOLA to pick up some more of those kick azz tamales!
