Cars use ethanol less efficiently than gasoline. Even if the price of ethanol based fuel is less than gasoline, we will have to buy more of it.

I thought that ethanol production required large amounts of water. If this is a case are we not adding to other problems?

Also, ethanol can't be sent through fuel pipelines (it eats the seals and can contaminate other fuels), so it has to be transported by barge, rail and/or truck.

A better solution is for Americans to wean themselves off of gas-guzzlers-- like that's ever going to happen.

On the issue of oil scarcity, we are exacerbating scarcity of product with our ever increasing "need" for power and speed. Take the mainstream Honda Accord. 1977 specs: highest output engine...1.6 litre, 68 horsepower. weight...2000 pounds Honda Accord 2007 specs: highest output engine...3.0 litre, 244 horsepower engine. weight...3200 pounds. Leave the SUVs out of the equation and look at what the public demands. You need 244 horsepower in an "economy" car? The American consumer wants power and size in their modes of transportation, so why not innovate and change the fuel. I say a Suburban in every driveway...powered by hydrogen or whatever we can come up with.

My sister owns a headhunting firm in TX and they are learning a grayt deal about ethanol and alternative fuel sources, and that is what I have been told. That transport of ethanol is extremely expensive.
