Cindy Meadows is my hero! She got the following, and more, approved at tonight's meeting:
* Putting a down payment on 7 acres near the library for future recreational use, such as tennis and basketball courts. Hopefully most of the cost will be covered by a grant.
* Approval for getting a master plan done for Helen McCall Park, including the playground.
* A sidewalk up Moll Drive from 98 to Helen McCall Park. (She is also having a study done that will hopefully lead to a traffic light at 98 & Moll Drive.)
* A sidewalk up Mack Bayou Road from 98. (One of my personal faves!)

If you ever have a chance to attend a BCC meeting you will see Cindy in action. She is right in there understanding and getting to the heart of every issue. Thank you Cindy!

First, let me give kudos to the Moms of Mission Park, for sticking through five and a half hours of the BCC meeting to represent their Mission. You girls are great!

I think Cindy does a good job at asking questions and presenting solutions most of the time.

Regarding the park behind the Court House Annex (not to be confused with Mission Park), the grant, if received, will match only the downpayment of $360,000 for the purchase of the $1.25 million piece of property for the park on JD Miller Rd. Additional grants for building the park could be applied for after the property is purchased. If the grant to match the downpayment is not received, the land will most likely not be purchased by the County. Let's hope that they receive the grant.

One thing that should be noted is the fact that Commissioners Scott Brannon and Ken Pridgen voted in opposition of trying to move forward and purchase the property. They don't mind spending more than $10 Million for a horse park in Mossy Head, but heaven forbid they spend one on recreation for SoWal, outside of their districts. I have a smiley for those two... (cover your eyes, kids)

It was a very long meeting, but worth the wait! Thanks for the support!

My understanding is that if the grant is not received, then the county will use what's left of $5M that was set aside for recreational land a while ago, plus some land use fees, to buy the property. However, I also hope they receive the grant and use the least amount of county money as possible.

We heard the 2 male "no" votes, but weren't sure which 2 males voted no. I'm not surprised, but am disappointed.

It's been suggested that we incorporate as a non-profit so that we can accept donations of playground equipment. Does anyone know what's involved in getting this done? Does it involve horrendous amounts of paperwork?

It almost seemed to me the Cindy was blindsided by the 2 no votes. I don't think she saw this coming. When I heard them, I was thinking we should have got up there and voiced our opinion. I was just in shock that they said no, when they were so favorable toward the park last meeting.

I also will talk to Cindy about the medians. Why do we have the ugliest medians around - yes 30 A is beautiful but the soccer moms and everyone else ride up and down 98, looking at weeds! The entry into Panama City Beach medians are beautiful! I was thinking maybe the master gardener program might be interested in the beautification of the medians. This seemed to be a big issue about spending the money to maintain the medians.
Correct me if I am wrong!

Thanks to Cindy for her diligence and hard work!

I'm so glad y'all were there for the meeting. We tryed, but little beach was getting WAY too hard to handle. (and the other 2 were not too happy after 1 1/2 of sitting)
Glad we didn't wear green- it was getting a bit crazy!!:yikes:

I kept wondering if it was worth sitting there for so long, because after the Scenic Gulf Drive Parking discussion, the meeting was not very lively. (I'll let one of the Surfrider people give an update on that one!).

But yes, it was worth my rear end being asleep for a week- the master plan for the park is going forward!! I wonder if our stamina was being tested?

And SGB brings up a very important next step- incorporating AND setting up a website just for Mission Playpark. C'mon- I know there are some SoWallers out there who can help make this happen.

Let me just say that it was an honor to hang out with those 2 yesterday- SGB has a gift for asking for what she wants, visualizing the future, and remaining calm throughout the process, and Supermom has the passion and persistance and stamina. Those 2 are a force to be reckoned with!

It was a pleasure to meet the Park moms. We seem to have the same goals for our children. The green-shirt-wearing mothers seemed to consume all the energy, and when the dust clears, they will be totally baffled and pissed because there will be a parking lot to accent the big ugly condo. Bottom line is, most of the people that live there are time share owners. On a good note, I and Smiling Joe may arm ourselves and squat on the property in front of the Majestic and take the beachfront property ourselves. It's O.K. We'll let ya park there. On one note, there is no such thing as a private beach. If ya wanna argue that I'll provide proof. Mahalo and educate yourself here: www.surfrider.org
