This looks like it could be a good use for recycled tires. Tire chips are mixed with gravel and some sort of colored polymer that binds them all together and then it is paved into a roadbed. As you can see here they have used two colors for a two-toned effect.

It would be a huge bonus if this stuff allows water to seep through. I assume it does.

Thoughts?

HHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM???????????

I don't know. What about the steel wires that are in the tires? Are they cut up enough not to sick up and make holes in peoples' feet?

Other than that, looks like a good way to recycle. I like the water drain, but what sort of load do they hold up to???

I didn't see any wires. It will be interesting to see how it holds up.

I wonder if the rubber will give added traction for stopping vehicles. I know that shouldn't be an issue on low speed roads like these, but just thinking big picture. I know that when rubber oxidizes, it gets crumbly and slick, and may present problems. Since rubber deteriorates with time, and gravel will hold up for much longer periods, I wonder if heavily traveled roads using this would wear out much faster than ones paved with gravel. Again, probably won't affect a resort area like WaterSound, which doesn't get heavy traffic.

I do applaud people for trying new ways to recycle tire, other than the fisherman's night time mosquito repellent, which also probably causes a thick tar in the lungs when they inhale the burning tires. St Joe doesn't seem to be afraid of trying new things.

How hot does it get and does it have the same problems mentioned in the Sandestin playground thread?

Yes, and I wonder if it smells when it heats up?

I almost went back inthere this morning, but it looked like they were busy working on it.

On a good note it will reduce noise, vibration and asphalt smell. Buy the way wire is in the belt structure they only recycle the tread part with no wire.

OK, cool. Looks to me like stripping out the wire is a difficult task, but......................
