What we need is separation of church and state in the Mormon Republic of Utah....but that won't ever happen. Romney's resume is strong, and his religion does not have any weight in my voting decision.....

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but when I read the mention of cult I had to check it out. It is listed on www.cultwatch.com and this is what they state about the religion:

Taken from this link: http://www.cultwatch.com/mormon.html

What they will tell you:
Mormons are Christians. (Mormons want very much to be recognised as a normal Christian denomination.)

What they won't tell you: actually, I recall a recent interview with a Mormon, and they said all of this.

They believe that God is just an exalted man. Is that so far removed from people believing that Jesus, once a man, is God?

They believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers. Don't most preachers preach a similar belief that good and evil exists in all of us, and that Satan often wears a shiny robe?

They believe we can become gods ourselves. Maybe this idea directs people into the thought that we can all live a pure path, and are much stronger than we may think we are. If they taught that people are all low life scum, that wouldn't give people much to ambition to do right.

They believe that Mormon women are to be pregnant for eternity populating their own planets. This is an interesting one, but in the church in which I was raised, it doesn't stray too far from the concept that sexual intercourse should be for procreation only, and any feelings of lust are wrong. (...and we wonder why are kids are screwed up when it comes to sex) If you look at this idea from a purely scientific statistical point, it doesn't seem to weird. If we stopped procreating, the human population would die off very quickly.

Absolutely no archeological evidence for the Book of Mormon has been discovered (except for the part that was copied straight from the King James Bible).

Over 4000 changes have been made to the Book of Mormon since it was first published - a far cry from what Smith called "The most correct book on earth."

I'm just curious if this is true or if they are blowing certain small, isolated, or one time issues up into something bigger?

Do the Mormons claim that the Book of Mormon was discovered, or recently written? I have no idea.

We have no idea how many changes have been made to the Bible, so as long as we are comparing the two, lets keep a little balance.

As for CCK's comment that during the times of Jesus walking on Earth, Christianity could also be viewed as a cult, I agree. I see that we (people in general) tend to think of any unfamiliar religion as a Cult. We may not feel comfortable saying so, and the thought may be subtle, but I believe the thought is there. We want to believe that "our" religion is the "right" religion.

That was very enlightening SJ--- I have gleaned more about Christianity and Mormonism, and their differences, from you and CCC than I have from either Huckabee and Romney! I guess it is just a matter of interpretation, some religious analysts are stricter than others.

Um...I hope you're not serious. As much as I love those two fellas (and how many of us have been waiting patiently for a SoWal Translation with the words of SJ in red?) I don't think that the post you quoted fairly represents either Mormonism or Christianity.

I did not say it represented either religion, I just said it gave ME an better way to compare/contrast both of them.

Before this thread, in regard to Mormonism, I had only heard it was a "cult" and that Mormons took on more than one wife--there is yes, more to it than that, thank God. I probably now know more (which is not a lot, granted) than most non-Mormons in the U.S.

Whatever blows your skirt up...:dunno:

CCK's input has made me think that he's worth another look, so I guess that's a blow against ignorance...?

I think religion needs to be removed from the political process. Candidates need to clearly state their positions and beliefs and keep their various religious affiliations out of it. I don't care what religion someone practices - I care about their personal ethical code and policy decisions.

EVERY religion has a fringe or cultist element to it (and some pretty entertaining and rarely publicized tenets), and IMO the louder you proclaim your faith and true devotion to spiritual life, the less likely you are to be telling the truth.

I have had my fill of politicians arguing and pandering about the distractions and red flags of school prayer, holiday vs. Christmas trees, posting the 10 commandments, their opposition being controlling by this church or that, gay marriage etc. when there are REAL issues and REAL problems that need to be dealt with.

If we do not elect a great leader with ability and integrity in this election, I am firmly convinced we will all have front row seats to watch the decline of the American Empire.

Thank you CCK and SJ for the responses. I like hnoo2000 had only ever heard the multiple wives, wierd underwear, Utah, and cult. I realize it got way off track here and seems to only focus on his religion, but to even begin to consider the other stuff I needed to have a fairly good certainty for myself that he wasn't from something like the moonies or scientology.

To rephrase:

CCK and SJ thankyou for teaching me that LDS is not a cult, by my definition.

I think I could get behind Scientology before I could Mormonism. No real chance of either though.

Mormonism - Jesus came to the new world after he was crucified.

Scientology - Warlord alien enslaved souls and sent them to Earth and that is why people have mental/health problems.

Well just call me Mormon brother.

You can thank CCK, but I don't know jack about the LDS Church. I was just making some observations on a few points of comparison between two religions. If I had an extra life, I might be a theologian because I find religion very interesting. Many have the same basic lessons/principles, and many have extremists.
