your most unforgettable character? mr. dd's subscription to RD reminded me of this. I'd have to say mine was a "river man" I met many years ago. He lived in a house with holes in the floor and chickens in the house--just for starters.

And then, there was Marge the bartender in Luckenbach.

Who was yours?

Mike Quinn.

He is in his 50s but looks like he's about 70. He's missing most of his teeth, keeps a bottle of vodka under the seat of his truck, and worked with a traveling carnival for years. He is also one heck of a painter. My mom is a painting contractor and he sometimes does some work for her.

He's one of those people... you can never tell if he's drunk or sober, because alcohol causes virtually no change to his personality. He's simultaneously the funniest and most annoying person you've ever met. When I was still living in Virginia, and found myself having to talk to him, the first thing he'd always ask me was, "Are you eighteen yet?" :puke:

Too many to list, but the first one that came to mind was an elderly man who I stopped to meet because he had the most interesting yard decor. It was al handmade out of junk from carnivals and such. The entrance to his driveway is made of stone pillars on both sides, then topped with with plastic carnival horses from what looks like merry go rounds. Then he had this whole parkload of benches, gazebos and lawn ornaments made out steel and plastics all named after his deceased wife. He walked on crutches, had some of his toes missing from diabetes, but he still had a wonderful sense of humor. Matter of fact, his neighbor says he was quite the ladies man and danced all night at the senior rec center. I stopped back one day and met his daughter and she told me he had passed away.
He was a charachter alright and I won't forget him.

The same here...there are so many but my favorite would have to be not one person but also a group-of men in my case.
My grandfather was a retired Marine, and had a pub here locally years ago (late 70's to early 80's), he had a group of regulars that came every night (if someone was missing you went looking). They had dart trournments regularly on Thurs nights...and boy did they give me so much of the "who I am today". They were respectful, free-spirited, lovers of life-but respected it fully! I love oysters, and he would take me for oysters on Friday afternoons to a place over in Freeport (Alaqua). Each time he would order me 2 dz., but to hold off on the last one. One of the guys would always ask even when they knew the answer "Why can't she have the last one?". It would embarass me so much...He would reply "because I'm not taking her home all hot and bothered". After I finished my oysters (much still like today) I would dance a song or two with them (Crazy or Snap Your Fingers were my favorite) then we would ease back across the bay. Good times...memories that truly made me who I am today!:D

Another favorite...is my "Captain and the Kid". The kid was me...about 8 years old...

My dad was a boat captain, he and all the captains at the dock called me princess...This particular captain was a gentle, jolly, and yes at times a little crazy around the edges. (One of the last captains left...off the east coast of GA...Brunswick).

No matter how rough the seas got, I always wanted to ride in the wheel house with him..most of the time everyone else was down below...

He taught me one of my favorite daily saying...Just ride with it Princess, you can handle the roughest of seas if you just relax and do what you know to do...nothing more nothing less. I don't think I ever saw him get anzious or overwhelmed.

Every time I hear Jimmy Buffet's Captain and the Kid I think of him! Good Stuff!:D

Mine's DEFINATELY my maternal grandmother. We called her Nu Nu (please don't ask) and she was this 65 year old spitfire that bowled, gambled and grew highly illegal vegetation amongst the tomato plants on her front porch. She also kept a stack of nudie mags in the back of her closet (found them when I was ten) She smoked like a frieght train, drank like a fish and made the meanest plate of peanut butter chocolate chip cookies you ever put in your mouth.

I sure do miss that old broad.
