We're thinking about taking a 3-4 day trip to DC with the kids during spring break. The kids have never been. Any tips on where to stay? $300+ nightly hotels are not an option. ;-) We plan on taking in the usual sights but any advice, comments, and links to websites are welcome!

I did an internship semester there in college.

Best thing to do is find a hotel in the burbs that's within a block or two of a metro stop, and then park your car for the duration. Save for Georgetown (which requires a bus transfer) you can get anywhere you want to get by metro, provided you're willing to walk a couple of blocks here and there.

Which brings to point #2- wear good and comfortable walking shoes. The Mall is a hike from the Capitol to the Washington Monument, and even within the museums, you're covering a lot of turf.

If you're interested in a White House tour, call your congresscritter's or Senator's D.C. office on Monday. Tickets for that go fast during school holidays. They can also tell you what other tours require reservations, and what your chances are of getting them.

I've gotten many behind the scenes tours of the Senate Bldg and Capital, with a White House tour, but I'm not sure how much the general public is privy too, without an inside connection. You might contact your Congressmen or Senators' offices to find out how they may be able to arrange some things. If nothing else, go find your Congressman's office and say hi. Get your kids pics taken with your Representative. Things like that leave impressions on kids.

Not on the Mall is the Spy Museum. Get a schedule for times -- long lines. I forget which street it is on, but it is a few blocks north of the Mall. Really cool. Arlington Cemetery is pretty cool, but it is a little out of the way. There is plenty to see on the Mall. Jefferson and Lincoln memorials are really impressive. Make sure you read the quotes. Holocaust Memorial, Art and History museums, Air and Space, botanical gardens are all good. Maybe see a play at Ford's Theatre. Skip the American Indian museum. It is so unorganized and the flow is terrible. Check out the Supreme Court. Oh yeah, I love the sculpture garden on the mall. The train station is pretty cool. The WWII Memorial is fairly new, and good for a sit by the fountains.

No guidance on where to stay. I always stay with fam. Leave the pretty shoes at home, and go for the comfy running shoes. Grab a back pack, and keep refreshed with gatorade. Plenty of drink vendors on the mall.

Yea! This is exciting. SJ, I read about the spy museum and it sounds really cool..Dylan would love it. I'm over at tripadvisor researching now..the DC walking tour sounds good too. We're not afraid to walk...we'll train ahead as if we were visiting Disney.;-) Great suggestions so far...would love to see our Congresswoman there...we've sent her enough letters and email the past few year...maybe she'll remember us. haha

We are going in the summer for a week or so. We went a couple of years ago and are planning to stay around DuPont Circle. I have had some tell me the crime is bad there, but I did not experience it. And I spoke to the daughter of a friend that went to college in the area and said it was a good, safe area. We found a B&B for $150 a night. When we went last I stayed at http://www.carlylesuites.com/. It was very inexpensive at the time.

Parking is a nightmare. We got there early in the day, around 10 so we could park in back of the hotel. Vehicle stayed parked until the day we left. I bought Metro passes and we just did that. Nice place, a couple of blocks from the Metro, and a Starbucks on the way.

This time I am driving to Jacksonville and taking the train to Union Station, then taking the Metro to the B&B.

Your Congressperson does have someone in their office that will be very helpful in getting you into some tours that you have to plan ahead to do. It is an amazing city. That is why we are going back, 4 days was not near enough time to see it all.

Highly agree with the Metro being the way to go. Parking meters are for two hours max, and you have to move the car, not just insert more coins.

The food in DC is incredible, and even more diverse than NYC. I've eaten at some amazing restaurants up there, but they are out of the way and I couldn't tell you the names of any of them.

It will cost you about $10, but I recommend buying one of those laminated maps of DC, with the mall on one side, and all of DC on the other. Should also have the Metro stops listed. I bet you can find one at your local Barnes and Noble.

Ocean Lover, when I was in 7th grade we took a school trip to Washington D.C.! We stayed in Silver Spring, MD which is about 7 miles from DC. And I'm sure the rates are a lot less for a motel per night there. Make sure if you have time you go to the Smithsonian Institute. We went there and to all the presidential monuments, went to Mount Vernon, sat in on a session of the House and Senate. Had a great time.

Here are some links to hotels and motels in Silver Spring.

Maps you can print or order stuff directly from the Metro people.

We bought the following for the time we were there. Worked great cause we could go back and forth to the room as it got hot during the day. None of the trips were ever over $2.65.

7-Day Short Trip Pass $26.40
Valid for seven consecutive days for Metrorail trips costing up to $2.65 between 5:30-9:30 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. on weekdays. Pass is valid for any rail trip at other times. If trip costs more than $2.65, you must use the Exitfare machine to pay additional fare. Pass will be returned for continued use during valid period.
