OMG, how ever will we survive. All the truckers are doing is pissing off everyone who also buys pricey gasoline. I guarantee you that not one oil executive got stuck in the trucker traffic, nor do they likely shop at Not-So-Super Walmart.

Isn't not so super wally worlds truckers non-independents:dunno: I read an article on this on msn a while back and they said most large companies won't be hurt due to the fact their truck drivers work for them.

The price of diesel is dictated by the price of heating oil predominately in the NE and NW. Diesel is culled off during the same refinery process that makes heating oil. I don't totally get it, but that's what I've heard. It's not tied to auto gas at all...

Right...it's the owner / operator independent truckers that are really getting drilled...

Walmart has it's own trucking division as well as independant truckers. Ind. Truckers can't afford to run their trucks on the amount being paid to them. The rates have not gone up in two years and the price of fuel has doubled. I've heard blame put on truckers for the price of goods going up due to the fuel increase...and it is not true. Truckers are not getting more money...so where is it going??

Oil companies recently posted record profits of $123 Billion. That's where it went.

I don't understand independent trucking. If I owned a truck and my costs went up, I'd go to whoever hired me and tell them my prices just went up. Do you have to strike to do that?

Most independant truckers lease their trucks to company's like Landstar. Using a computer, you pick your load with a predetermined $ amount per mile. These prices have not gone up. Landstar charges about 30% of that, plus you pay for ins, taxes, maint, licenses, etc....which adds up to about 300-$400 per month. Right now, you are lucky to get a load at $2.50 per mile for a 43,000 lb load. No way to break even on that when a semi gets about 7 miles per gallon at $4.00 or more per gal.

Thanks, that's a little bit more clear. So, the employer doesn't choose the trucker, the trucker chooses the job. Are they stuck with the lease? Can they just not pick a load? I guess what I don't understand most is why supply and demand (of truckers willing to work at a loss) won't work without government intervention.
