Does anyone have experience having this done? cost? where to do?

I was trying to navigate the Shutterfly site to check if the photos we have are of high enough resolution to blow up that large, but I'm not getting very far yet. I am electroniclly challenged though. :bang:

We have some pretty large photos that were used for our band calendar. My daughter has made a couple of them black & white and tinted some color into them. We wanted to use these as poster size (mounted) and set them on easels for part of the Band Banquet decorations.

Any advice?

If you have jpg's and you size up, you will lose quality. Even when you have jpg's and size down, you run into quality issues. The compression algorithm is what is called "lossy," so you "lose" info about some of the pixels when you size down. The normal advice is to size down a small increment at a time (rather than in one felt swoop) to accommodate the mathematical compression algorithm.

Kinko's always does ours for the church projects we have.

Jpgs can be a pain in the butt. Believe it or not -- not all jpgs are created equal. It depends on the compression "method" applied when saving. In print, a good rule of thumb to follow is...never enlarge more that 200% you will start to loose quality and the photo will appear fuzzy. Having said that, most prints coming off the photo websites these days can only print at 100-150 dpi so if you have a fairly good image to start with you can sometimes push the 200% rule a lot. If it is a jpg and you would like to email it to me, I can check it out for you. Just let me know they size you are trying to get to. PM me for email info.

Thanks! I will try to send one through. I'm going to have to wait for some help to figure out how to send it.

It has to do with the lossy compression algorithm. That's why png is so much better -- its algorithm is lossless.

:rotfl:I know I got into art because the told me there would be no math. They lied.

png's are great for powerpoint and internet, but in my business you really can't print with them. Actually, jpgs are not the best for printing either, but you would not believe some of the junk people try to push through.

Thanks everyone for your info. ktschris, I have sent one through to you.

I just found the file size. It is 3.5 MB. So it is actually larger than what I sent through to you. That was the largest my photobucket account allowed.

The photo you attached is 10" x 14" at 72 dpi. I think Minnie is right, your best bet might be to go to a kinko's and "test" one and see how large you can push it. I can make it any size you want, but since I'm not working from the original and it has been saved more than once, I wouldn't trust sending it away to do a large size print.

It is a very cute poster though ;-)
