I have no problem with them being a private town and doing whatever they want: the problem that bothers me is that they say one thing in their advertising ( much of it paid for with TDC dollars) and do another in real life.

I don't go there much anymore; even moved my post office box--so, for all practical purposes, it is a moot point for me--except that I really did enjoy the town and some of the buisness people are very nice.

As Robert Davis said in his Op Ed piece last month--the Town Council has not identified the real problem and the solutions they are using are causing even more problems.

Those basic liability issues you mentioned potentially exist for every community, business, and piece of property in the area, so you can't blame it for the recent spate of rules and unfriendliness. ;-)
You are correct. That liability exists everywhere, and Seaside is one of many places which seems to be trying to decrease liability. That is only my guess. Of course, as I said, that could just be their excuse. Still, it doesn't give people an excuse for being rude or unfriendly.

Seaside has a list of vendors, photogs, wedding planner, etc...that you can ONLY use if having your event in Seaside and I beleive Seaside gets a cut of those profits. It's simple economics and it keeps the everyday normal folks/riff raff out of their hair. IMO it has nothing to do with liability.

I hear you all, and agree basically. except for one thing. seaside has always done things their own way as they certainly should. it is not perfect nor has it ever been. if you want to do business in seaside, you do it their way and you pay for the privilege. it has always been and remains a wonderful place for my family to play whenever we get the urge to drive south a few miles and be tourists. no one has ever told us we weren't welcome in any way.

Tootsie, I used to think the same, that no one has ever told me that I'm not welcome in Seaside. However, I was only ignoring the signs which were hanging in front of my face. When I woke and realized that the signs represent the words of Seaside owners, I suddenly felt like I had not been made to feel welcome.

I guess I have always ignored such signs. I have friends who own property in seaside and my guess is that these signs do not represent them personally. It would be nice to have a seaside homeowner come on the board and explain what's up with the signs, and what is behind some of the town rules. my guess is crowd control during peak seasons, but who knows.

maybe I am the one who is just not listening to Seaside's "not welcome" hint. maybe I have worn out my welcome, but don't know it yet. I don't know. punzy and I spent most of the day there, visited with friends, had juice for lunch, shopped and never even thought about whether or not we were welcome. I take it for granted that we are. it isn't something I ever even thought about before seeing some of these threads on the board. it just makes me wonder what others have experienced that is so different from my own experience. sure, there will be isolated incidences with people, but really - do others feel unweclome at seaside?

maybe I should ask someone official next time I'm there if in fact we are welcome when we are there enjoying all seaside has to offer.

Sounds like a perfectly lovely day in Seaside, Toots! The only problem I have had in Seaside is driving through it. Makes me a freakin' nervous wreck. Even traveling at negative 5 mph, I have almost taken out a stroller and a family that just jumped out between parked cars.

it probably wouldn't cost that much for Seaside to change all the literature from "new urbanisn" to "new fascism". i think it's kind of catchy..:dunno:
