Since I didn't want to get off track on another thread I've decided to start this one.

Obviously my views on gay marriage are very biased.

I'm just curious why, if myself and my partner were to get married, would it adversely affect anyone else? At no time have I ever attended a straight marriage and felt that my life was now affected in a negative way.

Quite frankly it comes down to being a second class citizen. It wasn't too long ago that it was illegal for a black person and white person to marry. We as a society have since realized that this was based on nothing more than hatred and misinformation.

If you can give me just one good reason how a gay marriage would affect anyone other than the two involved please be my guest.

I have absolutely no problem with 2 mentally capable & consenting adults wanting to committ themselves to a legally binding monogamous relationship.

I really wonder WHY others do.

IMO changing any one of the criteria in the above statement is much more damaging to "values" and "family" than the minor fact that the adults are of the same gender.

Ok, I am in the same boat with you swgb, my partner and I represent the older boomer gay generation though. I am feeling very positive about the future now. I still am somewhat conservative in my view of things and would prefer not to rattle the socially conservative Church goers who feel they "own" marriage--I only want partnership recognition by the State of Florida (maybe that is the way to go--appease the conservative Republicans first--Charlie Crist, hello???). That will give us partnership rights, such as who determines what my course will be taken should if I need to be on life support, and who should direct/ partake in my/our combined finaces and property--fortunately all the legal work has been done by us to secure this ordinarily "basic," human right.

My Lesbian sister and I (sadly, we are the only two left in our family) kind of chuckle when we realize that she and her female partner have been together 21 years, my male partner and I have been together 14 years.....

My straight parents, on the other hand, divorced after ten years of marriage, and my straight (deseased) sister's marriage only lasted six years--so much for the notion of "frivolous" gay committments--at least in my family! In my family gay "marriages" seemed to work better and last longer!

Yes, the future will improve SWGB--any yes you are right---when I was a child in 1962, laws in 44 states did not even permit interracial marriages!! I am optimistic to see what the next 20 or 30 years will bring!

I fully support gay marriage.

I always try to apply a similar litmus test to social issues:

Does gay marriage threaten the life, liberty or property of another person? The answer is no. Then, in my mind there is no convincing argument against gay marriage.

It takes all of us who support gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender lifestyles to teach others who are less tolerant. There is still much to be done.

The only problem I have with gay marriage is I am so confused as to whether to be a bride's babe, or Best Mango.

Now I have to change for dinner to see off my BFF Stevo, who is moving to CA to marry his partner. My new BFF Mikey will be there, and he's getting married too. Kimmi- will need the name of a good florist.

I would really be interested in seeing someone's post who was against gay marriage. Would you get any takers on the political forum? Do you need/want a proxy poster to engage the unwary and begin a debate?\
*edit* I thought I was in the lounge.. I found what looked to be a Lortab on the ground in the west end Thumb and ate it. Disregard all but the first sentence of my above raving.
