Maybe it's too simple:

If I make $50,000 a year, my household has an income of $50,000 per year. If my husband and I both make $50,000 per year, we have $100,000 per year. That means that as a couple we can afford to buy twice the house that a single person can buy.

No need to get snarky Nohall. I thought you were talking about insurance.

Ok, what about the single person making the same amount of money as a married couple with children? They will qualify for the same amount of mortgage as you being single, considering all things being the same. So where's your argument? You make the money and want bigger house, you qualify, you get it. It's that simple.

Single people do get a raw deal. It's cheaper and easier to live in pairs. Single people pay more for insurance, loans, and pay a higher tax rate. Their co-workers also expect them to work for less money and take the bulk of the overtime since they don't have sick kids or recitals to attend.

This is true, especially if your in a same sex relationship. Why just clothes alone, our wardrobe doubled. ;-)

I loves you, Mangy, and you know it. But you called me out. It was not at all clear that you were talking about insurance.

I give up. Where? I'm not sure where yours is, either...:dunno:

Something I noticed from this link http://pubdb3.census.gov/macro/032007/hhinc/new05_000.htm on a differnet thread, is that the top 4th and 5th quintile of income households consist mainly of households in which there are 2 earners or more - 65.7% and 75.9% respectively.
For the households with one earner, 29.7% in the 4th highest quintile and 20.9% in the 5th.

Sweetie, with a sugar daddy, you HIRE someone to paint your crown moulding while you are cruising the Mediterranean. Get with the program, girl! ;-)

The ones I've had are based on my income. Oddly enough, it's half of what I would make as a couple. I've had loan officers tell me outright that I would have an easier time refinancing if I were married. They can't discriminate, but don't tell me that it's just as easy to get a mortgage as a single woman!.

I fail to see how being single is discriminatory relative to mortgage financing. Marriage, having a family, and a single lifestyle are choices, the same as where you decide to live, your profession, or just about anything else in life. Like I said above, financing is based on income and credit and non-discriminatory.

I am not sure what your point was Justalocal, so correct me if I am wrong in your intent.

Are y'all suggesting that a Bank should give a $500K mortgage to a single person making 100K vs. 2 people bringing in $300K? or should the Bank give $500k to the family man/woman who has 3 kids and needs that 5 bedroom house who earn 100K? I just can't validate the argument. I also don't see what this has to do with how gay marriage affects society, which was the original question.

Mango, I started to say something snarky, and realized that you and I are comparing apples with skateboards. We're not even really talking about the same thing.

Which is fine, because you're right--it has nothing to do with the original thread. (Actually it could, but not as we are arguing it.)

I'm sorry if I was being snarky. Rough day. Love ya, mean it...

Kitty... Stay out of my closet unless you're painting it.

Both home and auto insurance have discounts for being married. Health insurance is underwritten differently for married vs. single people, because studies show married men are healthier and single people tend to have longer admissions to the hospital because it's harder to discharge them when there is no one to one at home to take care of the patient.
