Note the afro, the guns and bullets...look closely..It's us they're laughing at.

Gulp, they are laughing at us? Who is doing the laughing, the New Yorker or Barack and Michelle?

People reveal so much about who they are and how they see the world in interpreting illustrations. To me the illustration is hysterical in that it is a satire on cultural prejudices concerning anyone or anything who is not a member of the White Mens Club. The satire is on us, not the Obama's. And it is a political satire in the sense that there are some groups trying to mount a scare campaign...you know "the sky is falling. the sky is falling"..to freak people out about what "blacks" would do in the White House. Note the afro, the guns and bullets...look closely..It's us they're laughing at.

:dunno: It only is us "they" are laughing at, if "we" are those who believe the silly rumors. I don't think anybody who posted here does.

the hypocrisy of the left is it's uncompromising intolerance to anything other than liberal dogma, and the hypocrisy of the right is it's never ending thirst to micro-manage personal liberty whilst spewing never ending bile about freeing us from government. This image has power only when you protest the wrong intent.

They are obviously just making fun of the ridiculous Obama rumors. I think it is well done - it covers every falsehood I?ve heard.

Pretty funny stuff.

This is exactly how I feel. I have received some ridiculous emails that make me do this....

Obviously the New Yorker. Michelle and Barack failed to see the humor. I can't blame them but I thought it was quite funny. The problem is, way too many people who will think it is an attack on Obama. The targeted audience won't see they are being mocked. It reminds me of a diehard conservative I know who loves the Colbert Report. He doesn't realize it's satire.:rotfl: I'm just going to play along for a while.

Right here!
Lou Dobbs last night showed some past New Yorker covers, they have a long history of this. The "outrage" is due to the Obama factor. We're in uncharted territory with Barack running for president. The media just needs to calm down. I find it so fascinating to watch - we all talk about ignoring the color of a man’s skin when making judgment calls, this whole election has been one huge failure in accomplishing that. The media, Rev. Wright, all the pundits, CNN ("Black in America" series??? - OMG) Fox, the polling companies, they are all largely to blame. America is being spoon fed veiled racists propaganda in the form of polls, specials, etc.. "If it bleeds, it leads." I think we all started out ignoring it, then the media got involved and "made it" an issue.

Obviously ( or not ) they were going for satire and maybe assumed everyone at least in NY would "get it". I think they missed the mark by a wide margin as indicated by an on the street survey of NY'ers shown on Tv last nite. Every one they talked to didn't see it as satire - and probably wouldn't read the article. I guess they were just your average Joe lunch box crowd ; the elitist, who probably would see it as satire and reads the NY'er- would never be caught on the street for an interview.
To their credit both campaigns denounced the picture and although I am not for Obama I thought it in poor taste.

A word of warning before reading below: I'm a little groggy from oral surgery, so hopefully the grammar isn't too off.

I think the audience that regularly reads the New Yorker will catch the satire. Yes, obviously the organization is trying to sell Magazines, and this cover will certainly help. Was it distasteful though, no. What's distasteful are the 18 emails in my inbox claiming that Barack Obama is a muslim (not that there would be anything wrong with that) and that he's tied into Al Qaeda, and that his wife is radical former Black Panther member who hates America. That's distasteful.

The New Yorker is poking fun at the ignorance of voters who play into the 'politics of fear', which, coincidentally, is the title of the cover story.

Furthermore, the New Yorker is one of the more liberal magazines in circulation, if this incendiary cover can draw a few new readers who don't understand the cover is mocking them, and not the Obamas, then perhaps the electorate as a whole will benefit.

Could the cover have been a bit more tasteful, perhaps. But while everyone's mulling over that, I'm going to clear out the "Obama Hates America" emails in by inbox and check my bank statement to see if I can afford the two thousand dollars to send to the Nigerian diplomatic attache who desperately needs the money to unfreeze his bank account filled with "millions and millions of dollars." He's told me that he'll give me ten percent of his account and pay me back my loan. He's called me "dearest Christian brother" and I kinda want to help him out.
