This may come across as a political slam but it is not. I knew nothing about Palin prior to hearing her name last Friday and figured I would give her the benefit of the doubt and read up about her before I made any decisions.
The more private parts of her life ARE admirable - working and raising a family, and bringing into this world a child with special needs, etc... are to be commended. That alone however does not qualify her for the second highest job in this country - but nor should it disqualify her from being considered. So, now that she is a now a woman being launched into the most public eye means her positions get to be scrutinized.
The fact that she is uber conservative in her thoughts and policies, the fact that she believes the war in Iraq is God's will (and this differs from Osama Bin Laden who also thinks he is following the will of God HOW exactly???), the fact that she is so much more pro artic drilling than shoring up funding for renewable energies, that she does not believe man is contributing to global warming while parts of her state are sinking, the fact that she sued the Bush Administration to protest the polar bear being on endangered species list as it interfered with her drilling ambitions for her state, the fact that her BIG fights with Republicans in Alaska was in fact over how to manage the huge windfalls of oil revenue, that she advocated for pork in bills she supported (something McCain himself has fought vociferously for years and in taking this stance had previously garnered the respect of many independents), the fact that she tried to ban certain books from the local library, the fact that she has in essence NEVER left the country apart from the one time to Kuwait - is quite the record and one quite unlikely to attract independent voters.
What the heck was McCain thinking?? Even her so called appeal as a reformer is now being questioned as she voted FOR the bridge to nowhere before she voted against it.
McCain should have followed his gut and picked Lieberman - the fact that now everyone knows that he and Ridge were the 2 top picks undermines Palin from the get go. The extreme right would have been pissed beyond belief but they would have had no place to go. They could have stayed at home I guess. But he would have potentially scored BIG with independents and his empty rhetoric now of refrom could have resonated. Now it is as flat as a pancake.
