I no longer stay in Dune Allen
No, not spending billions overseas, and not having massive trade deficits because we don't make anything here is what props up the economy.

Spending $ we don't have on crap from China that is purchased at Walmart isn't so bueno for our economy.
Those cheap goods from China effectively make you rich. It is the equivalent of trading your time for that of, say 10 chinese. I am looking around and seeing several low cost items that would have been out of my reach if they required 10 americans to produce them. Let the cheap labor build the cheap ****, and employ americans in more productive capacities.

No, they make my neighbors poor, which is why I go out of my way to buy local and made in the USA products!

I know the HIDDEN costs of Walmart and Made in China and it makes those items too expensive for me!

Global Competition

We live in a global economy. It only makes sense to produce goods and services that we have a competitive advantage or are competitively equal. If our goods are too expensive or the quality is poor, then customers won't buy them (either here or abroad). Now, you can bring non-economic decision criteria into the equation, but that will only go so far.

Concerning global competition, I think many Americans have a rude awakening coming. The competition from China, India, Brazil, Russia, the EEC (Europe), and the Middle East is real and is growing. Putting up artificial trade barriers will not work for very long. What we need to do is make sure that we are preparing our country (infrastructure, low cost & environmentally sensible energy policy, lower corporate tax rates, etc.) and future generations (education, etc.) for this global economy. Isolationism won't work.

A "good" economy must start at home and with each individual American.

This means we must alter our "materialistic" mind sets and start to save, conserve and strive to get (and stay) out of debt. We must educate ourselves and our children on the principles of personal finance and responsibility (credit, mortgages, investing, etc.)

Moreover, a good, strong, stable economy means that America stop being a debtor/consumer nation and revert into a saver/producer nation once again.

This would require sacrifice. A word that seems lost in America.

One can choose to eat this elephant one forkful at a time starting now, or risk having the whole carcass forcibly shoved down one's throat later on--their choice.
