I am struck by the irony of Bush's first press conference on the subject of our economy comming with only three months remaining in his eight year presidency and the content is to tell us our economy is on the verge of collapse unless immediate and unknow action is taken. And as for McCain, he has missed all the discussions that have gone on in Congress leading up to formation of our "rescue plan". Will Congress have to stop and explain everything to McCain before they can vote. How long ago was it that McCain said the fundementals of our economy are sound, a week, two weeks?

I don't think you really believe that McCain or Obama for that matter is out of touch with the negotiations. In DC politics, there is and always will be more success if you are sitting in a room together saying if we ALL don't fix this, we are all going to look like idiots. You really can't compromise well over the phone.

So, the point of Obama and McCain needing to be there is simple- It's time to cash in chips and give out new ones. This one negotiation will set the tone for how Congress will deal with the new POTUS no matter who it is. If one candidate comes off as weak, his colleagues will remember that in later negotiations. If one comes off as a bull in the China shop, they will remember that also. Getting elected is one thing, getting work done is another. Behind these closed doors will be a job interview, not a popularity contest.

So calling Nancy Pelosi and telling her..."Call me if you need me" was the proper response????

True leadership there

If this is what Repubs believe then why did they vote twice for a prez who goes from paralyzed to panic when a crisis occurs. This guy has been away from Washington for 42% of his time in office, could that be part of the problem, he hasn't been getting the work done? This problem is way too complex for me to fully understand that's why I hope the best minds in our country are working on it and I don't believe Obama or McCain are experts in this field. Let them stay on the campaign trail, have the debates and let the country see what we're buying. If they are needed I'm sure they won't have to stand in airport security lines to get back to DC in a hurry.

Most Republicans I know are privately appalled by Bush's lack of focus on domestic issues and his getting us in a mess in Iraq. His complicity in running up huge deficits helped lose the Congress for the Republicans. I consider Bush to be the Republican Jimmy Carter.:bang: However, Bush is history shortly and we must move forward. Of the two choices we have, McCain is the only hope for truly fixing this country's problems. Obama will tax us back to the stoneage and then sign the country over to the Chinese.:dunno:

Obviously you believe that Idlewind but according to some other learned people they indicate tax wise we might be better off with Obama. But a lot of people still think McCain is the Maverick, I stick to my vote for Obama and look for the change to fix the problems.

What "learned people"? The same ones who ran Freddie and Fannie into the ground? :funn:That is who Obama listens to. One of them even headed his VP committee. If you listen to Joe Biden for awhile you will see that Johnson (his name) has learned nothing since he left Fannie about how to make good decisions.:rotfl:

At 700 Billion due shortly, I think we will be taxed back to the stone age with or without Obama. And, China doesnt want us, they just want us to keep their economy going.:dunno:

For the record, I am not a registered Republican and I did not vote in the Republican primary.

You are missing the point. Getting elected President was the popularity contest part of what I am saying. What they are doing now is between the members of Congress. The members have an inordinate amount of power and is why we have a separation of the three branches of power. This is the inside the DC beltway part of US politics. You are right, the majority of the current members do not support the current president and how is that working out for any of us. Both current candidates are pushing fairly aggressive changes on the domestic front. If Congress does not have respect for the people residing at 1600 Pennsylvania, nothing gets done. That's why I say this is a job interview and will require negotiations with all parties involved.

Unfortunately for us all, you are dead right. We should let the Wall Street gangsters go belly up and take that 700 Billion and invest in getting us off of foreign oil. If all this deficit spending does not end, before long no one will be able to keep our economy going, it will implode from the weight of debt.
