Why do I have to pay a towing fee for the county?

My car was stolen in Destin, recovered in Freeport and towed 27 miles to DFS and I have to pay over 200.00 before my car is released. It was driveable by the way. Kick me while I'm down why don't ya?

Oh, yeah I forgot, the S.O. is out of money.

I assume you are paying the tow company that got your car to the impound yard? I am sure it was drivable but who would have driven it? File with the State Attorney for restitution from the criminal that took it.

My husband would've driven it home, why not? It's our car. :dunno:
Not everyone can afford to just shuck out 200.00 at the drop of a hat.
My point is: we weren't even given the option. I'll be shocked if I see any "processing" evidence inside my car other than the bottle of rum is probably gone.

It is a sad testimony to customer service that they did not call you before towing and securing the vehicle to see if you could have met them at the location.

Okay, I'm sufficiently surprised. There is some fingerprinting dust on my car (could've been done on the scene though). Find these punks, please!

I know it's probably little comfort now but if they are found the states attorney will contact you as the victim. You will then be able to get restitution. That's what happened when we had an incident with some thugs anyway.

Is it true that all "processing" has to be done in DFS? Seems a lot of time, gas, and money could be saved by having a processing unit at the Annex...not to speak of no need for a Sowaller to pay a towing fee...what's involved in processing anyway...

You would think so, but remember the substation is usually short-staffed - for example, there was only one investigator there this morning (they are split up because of the 10-hour 4 days a week, half-morning half-evening shifts) and processing a crime scene typically takes at least two, plus the one that was there was out looking for stolen vehicles and the person/people who stole them. Plus, there would have been a wrecker bill in any event, whether is it just to the sub or to the admin.

It does suck, though. There's not any dispute about that, from anyone.

They probably waited until Sunday to tow it, when the towing rates are nearly double.
