We won't do that though. Remember this summer when gas was at 5.00 a gallon? A majority of Americans were pushing for drilling. If those prices had sustained for a more extended period of time, the drill or not to drill debate would have been over by now. I think this should be broken up into two arguments - while I find the arguments for not drilling for NG off Florida's coast worthy of discussion, the argument for not drilling in a place like ANWR is silly. We have Federal land up there, it's an empty desolate place, and we already drill nearby. The eco-ninnys are worried about some Caraboe?? That's just silly. We need to put our security ahead such pointless concerns.

When the Alaskan pipeline project was being debated, the environmentalists warned of massive caribou deaths. In fact, caribou herds in pipeline areas have flourished. The environmental lobbyists lost their credibility a long time ago IMHO.

United Health Foundation reports Louisiana ranks last for overall health saying the dismal ranking has to do with the large percentage of uninsured residents, the large number of children who live in poverty and high rates of infant deaths, premature deaths, preventable hospitilizations and cancer deaths.

So this is the fault of oil drilling? Disparity in access to healthcare and poor lifestyle choices are to blame, not the petrochemical industry.

All I asked to see is objective evidence that Louisiana is an 'ecological disaster from one end to the other'. It is an absurd statement.

One of the best things our government has ever done is to set aside lands/waters for parks and wildlife refuges. Even Shrub has done so.

Once again we are being shortsighted - all drilling for oil in these areas does is prolong the date when we will once again need more oil. We'll be right back where we started and will have possibly destroyed something irreplaceable in the process.

If you were REALLY concerned about the security and oil link, you would be driving a car that got 45 mpg and insisting everyone else do the same.

"it's my way or the highway"- why can't we offset our loss in domestic production with more exploration which will safe gaurd against a worsening dependence, while also working to advance alternatives in key areas where those alternatives are both plausible and financially viable? As our domestic resources dry up we are dooming the country to a far greater crisis down the road. You are the one being shortsighted, not the people who are advocating both research for alternatives and increased production.

IIRC the petrochemical companies used lobbyists to bypass paying the state any kind of royalties.

The argument that mother nature releases oil into the environment makes it okay for us to do the same is absolutely hands down the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Follow that logic and you've got arguments like, "Well mother nature creates hurricanes and we wanted to surf bigger waves...."

Mother nature does a lot of things that we probably shouldn't be partaking in.

We are dependent on oil, we are pouring billions into the Middle East because of oil, and we all spent a lot of extra money and took an economic hit because of oil prices this year.

Now people are advocating drilling in areas that we specifically set aside for protection because we need more and more oil to feed our demand, whatever the consequences.

The solution to an unhealthy addiction is not to find more ways to feed that addiction.

One reason why Louisiana and the South generally are so poor is that poverty statistics are based on a national norm established by the federal government. If you make twelve dollars per hour in Louisiana it is quite different than making the same pay, say in NJ, NY or CT.

Question: did you drive a car today? This week? If the answer is yes, you are part of the problem. I am all for alternative, renewable energy sources but they are slow in improving to an economially viable reality. What do we do meanwhile?
