My experiences with New Orleans afford me broad license to point out how foolish it is to want to dump billions of dollars into the City. When someone here other than me has been asked for 30 million to place some commemorative plaques in the City's sidewalk, their opinion about what the taxpayer should or should not spend in New Orleans might matter. Sometimes it takes a butt head to keep people from being duped.

I was not disagreeing (or agreeing) with your opinion on New Orleans and Katrina aftermath (its too complex to analyze all that here). I was just pointing out that your response was phrased in a buttheadish manner. its rude enough to be funny so don't worry.

What some on this board know about New Orleans wouldn't fill a thimble. A couple of billion - man, get some fresh air.

my response to sending billions to new orleans was off the cuff. kind of like; since we're spending so much money on private financial institutions(without any accountability) and private auto manufacturers, why not send some down to a US municipality that could use some cash infusion? simple enough? and as to who should oversee the disbursements, isn't that the charge of FEMA? they're sure able to do a bang up job.

btw, i've never been drunk on bourbon street, or any other street in new orleans for that matter.

In regards to the posters in this thread, on this issue, the answer is yes ..... a resounding yes, and it ain't even close. You'll have to trust me on this one John - the people you want to give money to in New Orleans would be laughin their ass off at you. They don't respect easy targets.

taking your qualifications at face value on a BB would make me the rube you are painting me as. please qualify yourself as the authority on new orleans.

What i am hearing is folks say-
We need to keep Bush's promise in NO...

and other folks say-
That would be dumb because bad people would steal the money as always...

The point being missed, I believe, is-

When folks say that Bush left NO hanging and that we should allocate money to clean things up down there, fix the levees, rebuild, etc.

It is probably implied that when we dole out the funds that we should do so with adequate oversight and transparency so as to avoid corruption.

and when the President of the United States makes a promise to citizens, he should do all within his power to keep his word.

Absolutely correct on both responses.

You continue to be vague. Tell me exactly what problem you have with the citizens of New Orleans, I'm just not understanding your position.:dunno:

Here's a great quote (one of my favorites) from former Governor Earl Long that sums up New Orleans method of business:

"Don't write anything you can phone. Don't phone anything you can talk. Don't talk anything you can whisper. Don't whisper anything you can smile. Don't smile anything you can nod. Don't nod anything you can wink.'

To think that you are going to have "transparency" in doling out billions of dollars in New Orleans is the height of naivety. Corruption in the City is systemic. Try The Last Hayride and Bad Bet on the Bayou if you want better to understand the problems ........ or don't, if you just like New Orleans as an anvil to drop on Bush's head.
