Yes, and I'm fully aware of the SS problem because I expect my fair share in less than ten years. If it goes belly-up the blame falls on all 535 members of congress and all of their predecessors who knew of this problem and passed it on.:angry:


I would suggest that the fault ultimately falls at all of our feet. We could have demanded our government fix the problem; instead we demanded more and more government spending.
 
I believe we had a war about the issue of the power of the states vs the power of the federal government. We are ONE nation divided into states that all contribute to a central federal government that should provide for the people that it represents, in this case the people of NO.


I am not interested in the government "providing" for us. I would prefer they curtail their activities and let we the people keep more of our money.

Ah, we have an anti-federalist then? If we have no central government we have no unity between states and thus an even bigger economic/military/international standing situation similar to a pre-constitution United States.

Very shortsighted and lacking in a historical perspective IMHO. Look to world history - there are plenty of examples. Within our own county's history look at people like George Bush if you choose, or FDR, or McCarthy, etc.. Central governments aren't always your friend, my friend, sometimes they work against you. Ask yourself why our founding forefathers felt as I do that a central controlling body should always be limited? Also, ask yourself, why can’t states do what you seem to feel only a federal state can do?

Could the answer be lack of available emergency funds. I agree with you that a central government isn't always your friend but it should be. Let's not give up on this original idea.

It isn't us against them, it is We The People. I realize I'm a bit naive but I still believe in this. By having a central government that is supported by it's members (states) through contributions (taxes) we are able to set up reserve funds managed by departments to handle things like emergencies that a single state could not fund on their own. I admit it isn't working as well as it should but let's not give up so easily.

Yes, I understand there was ubercronyism on the levee board's part before the storm (and I am sure you realize the entity no longer exists). Still, that article is from 2005. I am not challenging or attacking you, I am just interested to hear what your take is on New Orleans (or all of Louisiana if you want to go as far back as Uncle Earl) government now versus August, 2005.

Dollar Bill being off the scene for the time being is obviously a positive. Some of MMM's clan being imprisoned is likewise an improvement (although hizzonor somehow apparently avoided Letten's net). Consolidation of the levee boards was an absolute necessity. Nevertheless, as you know, the City is chalked full of colorful and zany characters who appear en mass when there are big projects (yes, every place has them but NO and La. have way more than their fair share). Surely, you remember the gang of 10 - a bunch of trial lawyers who won the one and only casino located smack in the middle of downtown. Good Lord. Some of the most colorful reside out in the suburbs of Jefferson Parish but carry considerable clout within City politics and leadership circles (so despite efforts of JohnR and Poppy to impose a racial slant to my comments - my experience was that cronyism in New Orleans was an equal opportunity employer and cuts across both parties). Who knows, maybe the sway of these folks has diminished with Jindal in office but I would be casting a wary eye, and I can understand why the feds and the State would want to be excessively cautious with the rebuilding effort. BTW, a some of those people are really fun, but I damn sure wouldn't loan or give them money.

No, we have a FEDERALIST. Limited national government to provide for defense and foreign policy and all the other power concentrated as close to the people as possible.

Ok, now I'm confused. Who's right here. I always understood that one who favors a weaker federal govt. and stronger state govt. is an anti-federalist.
Unless of course you believe the federal govt. has become too powerful and wish to return to a more balanced shared power. I guess one could then label themselves as a anti-federalist-federalist favoring the return of the federation to federalism.:D

The Constitution's primary purpose was to very clearly define the limits of the federal government. I bet you can't list a single day in your adult life where the power of our central government did not reach out and control you in some way or another. Things have gotten way out of control.
