Obama's Big Bucks Bulletproof Wardrobe?

There's been a lot of speculation over whether Barack Obama actually wore bulletproof clothing when he was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States on Jan. 20. There were certainly a number of extraordinary security measures in place. One thing's for certain however - the only person capable of making bulletproof clothing that's indistinguishable from your average Hart Schaffner Marx ensemble is Colombian designer Miguel Caballero - but it costs a hell of a lot more.

(For the record, Caballero's rep declined to comment when we asked if they'd furnished the President with any clothing.)

Back in October we told you about Caballero's stylish $10,000 quilted riding jacket. Known as "The Armani of Armor", Caballero developed a proprietary lightweight anti-ballistic fabric which he fashions into a number of garments, including a bulletproof tuxedo shirt (above). This allows for maximum flexibility and discretion while providing protection from weaponry ranging from a 9mm pistol to an Uzi, depending upon the security level you select.

Caballero's high-end Black Label line, favored by such security-conscious VIPs as Prince Felipe of Spain, President lvaro Uribe of Colombia and President Hugo Chvez of Venezuela, also features a $12,000 bulletproof polo shirt, a trench coat, leather jackets and even ski gear. An additional stab-proof lining is optional on most garments. Check out the gallery for some more of his attack-proof designs.

I like knowing about new things I had no idea there were bulletproof tuxedo shirts. If it doesn't interest you then you have lots of options here. Read about something else. As I stated earlier, it is also reassuring to me that our President has these options for protection. Isn't technology wonderful?

Thanks for the link.

It's absolutely no surprise that a Colombian designer came up with this stuff.

As long as the designer's background checks out and we are not supporting arms to any bad people, I for one am glad that this kind of thing is available.

Yes, it is sad -- but our country's history says it is absolutely necessary. We can and should use whatever methods we can to ensure Obama's protection (and that of any other president).

Sarawind is not planting any ideas in anyone's head.

Unbelievable as it may sound, I have overheard people here in GA who watched the inauguration in anticipation of someone (white supremacist, Al-Queda, etc.) trying to take him down. Don't call the FBI -- they were not threatening the President. They just think that there are people out there who want to do that, either out of racial hatred or in an attempt to cause chaos in the US.

I think this is a security matter, too important for the lounge.

Really sad and scary. I pray that no one tries to hurt President Obama.

As goofy as the article is, it doesn't make sense. If you are truly that worried for your safety and have those kinds of resources then a reputable security expert would tell you that an assassin is going for the head shot. I would think in this day and age an assassin would assume that someone is wearing a bulletproof jacket or vest.
